Why is the Democrat Platform just abortion/contraception?

Why have the Democrats decided to pin Obama's reelection hopes on abortion and tax paid contraception?

    Am I missing something?

Is it now every parent's dream for their children to be able to have Federal funded extramarital sex?

Is it now every parent's dream for their children to engage in recreational sex without "being punished by having a child"? (As "the one" shared about his hopes for his daughters)

These are clearly hot buttons with the American Public who, by and large, are too concerned with American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, and The Bachelor to concern themselves with things like the economy, what's going on in the Middle East, and terrorism at home and abroad.

In short-the Democrats have nothing to offer in the latter areas, so the fore-"reproductive freedom"-is the only arena in which they can raise the public's interest.

The race card will also be turning up more and more often in the political deck-o-cards in the weeks and months ahead.

I expect to see a dramatic dip in the price of gas, as well, as October begins. Unless there is a way to blame the current spike in prices on GW Bush.

That's not the only set of issues in their platform. They have a whole set of other issues.

That said, it's the tune they're playing if late since the RNC is going out of their way to alienate female voters.

It has been their core issue for years

And just how are they doing that?

They can't run on their record or their accomplishments, so they've got to find a wedge issue to attempt to exploit.

The "prochoice/reproductive freedoms" platform seems to be the prominent media focus. Please enlighten us voters. What other issues are they stepping up to confront, and what is their strategy to effect the changes that they propose?

As a female voter, I do not feel alienated by the Republicans.

As a Christian, I feel more alienated by the Democrats.

Despite how the media likes to portray America as a "Christian" nation, I firmly believe born again Christians are in the vast minority.

If you are a Christian, you should be completely terrified by the pro abortion agenda.

Some non Christian women are as well.

But what is more and more common is the "it's my body it's my choice" for women, and that is what is consuming America. Many American women don't look at it as an "Abortion" platform, they look at it from a "well, the democrats are for me doing what I want to do...and the republicans want to tell me what I can and can't do with my body"

    It stinks.

    Quite well said.

Also women see Republicians as telling them they are of less value than men. It is a perception the Republicians need to work on and change if they are going to win back the votes of many women. It will be a hard job when you look at proposed laws and recently passed laws by various state governments.

Perception is vital in an election.

Come on! No one is that obtuse!!!

You absolutely do not understand what you are reading.

The Democrats are telling us that babies are of no value - period.

And that isn't just perception - that is reality.

Only from Iraq, which mostly did.

The media likes to drum up the "reproductive freedom" part because it is a passionate issue between voters. Think about how you responded emotionally to the OP and some of the replies, including mine. It probably had a higher level of emotional investment in your reaction. I know it did mine.

The DNC has many planks in their platform, to suggest otherwise denies reality. As I checked some news sites today I saw four or five platform issues being raised by the current administration and their allies on the Hill. They aren't just talking about "prochoice/reproductive freedoms" but also about the economy, military, education, health care, and the role of the federal government.

Saying the DNC is only talking about " abortion/contraception" is like saying the RNC is only talking about tax cuts for the rich. It isn't accurate and fails to take in the full picture of the national conversation. The media does puff some of the issues more and more but overall both major parties have a robust platform and talk about the planks often.

As a Christian voter I feel alienated by both parties...equally...

The RNC is making a bunch of mistakes in how they're handling issues related to female concerns. One of the first is having an "all male" panel discuss reproductive rights. That is just asking for trouble. Also their key presidential candidates are stuck in a rhetoric cycle that isn't being perceived (hey, it might not be accurate but perception is about 75% of political jockeying these days) as generous towards women. Then you get into this whole Rush thing...that is a HUGE mess...

Given your worldview commitments I have no trouble believing you're not offended by the RNC. That's okay, just keep in mind a majority of women don't share those exact commitments. They're being pretty put off by the rich, white guys they perceive as leading the RNC.

You make good points, Preaching, but as was pointed out earlier-perception is everything. To many voters, the perception is that the Dems are only concerned about this one issue and are weak on everything else.

I agree completely that the RNC is making a great many huge, stupid, blaring gaffs. Romney seems weak on everything to me. Santorum seems to forget to put on his tin foil hat half the time. I very much wanted to vote for Herman Cain, who seemed to be the total package.

I'm not thrilled with either side, and I believe our nations decline will continue unchecked for another four years no matter which one we elect.

The problem with being a Christian voter is...we don't have a Christian party. And we haven't for some time.

So let me guess, the answer to a Democratic platform that has nothing in it but abortion rights is to nominate a Republican that is pro abortion, and a cult member at that.

    You guessed wrong.

But you just keep right on playing that one note song of yours.

BTW - how can you support Santorum who is a Catholic? Doesn't that make him a cult member too?
