Oops! I mean to write "one every day carry bible" in the title .... sorry!

One part of me feels that it is good to stick to ONE bible to get to know it well so as to find passages quickly. The mind will get used to remember if the verse is on the left page or the right page, toward the top or the bottom, etc. Just like driving where the brains knows where the brake pedal is automatically, it will also sense where the passage is.

And when one is sitting next to a non-believer and showing him bible verses that will reveal to him God's plan of salvation, there wont be any markings in it to distract that individual (many of which, out of ignorance, will think it to be disrespectful to make notes on a biblical page).

The other side of me differs.

My other side feels that one should have one bible for reading, on which there are no markings of any kind, so as to focus on the reading and whatever new insights you gain from it ..... and another bible with markings, perhaps with one's own topical chain reference, underlining, highlighting, color marking, etc.

This one will come very handy when preparing sermons, bible studies, and debating doctrines with other believers, and the markings in it will serve as a sign that you have indeed taken the time to devote to God (since they are, sadly, the first ones to improperly judge).

The inner conflict comes out of I grew up being loyal to just one item (one car, one belt, one one anything, etc). It makes me bond with it and became very familiar with it.

IN my youth I remember most ministers simply used one bible (but had perhaps a study bible such as the Thompson Chain Reference) to research topics and prepare their sermons. However, that particular EDC (every day carry) bible went with the minsiter everywhere, and it was the one used in the pulpit on sundays, etc.

I was wondering how you feel about this? I am interested to hear from those who (like me) spend a lot of time reading and meditating in the word.

Do you use just ONE bible as you MAIN one? Or do you use various and reach for whichever according to the need, with no particular strong favorite towards any?

I have several Bibles in different translations. I have two I consider "church Bibles" which is funny because I use them at home just as much. Those two are the ones I write in. LOL, years ago I started keeping track of which passages I heard sermons on. :D You guessed it, there are a lot of dates and underlining in those Bibles!

Nowdays though I'm just as likely to carry around an electronic version that lets me highlight passages ad make notes(though I'm not a note taker). I use E-Sword quite often.

I have one primary Bible that I use for church and when I travel - my smaller ESV.

Then I have my ESV Study Bible in the living room for my study/devotional time.

Finally, I have my iPad with a bunch of Bibles on it but I've been using the ESV Study Bible "read through the Bible" thing on the ESVSB website for my before bed Bible reading.

Yeah - pretty much ESV but I do still have my NIV84 that I use a lot and my NKJV as well. :)

No, why? I don't "verses" any Bible. They all have their good and bad points and I don't pit them against each other.

    my final decision: two bibles

one for preaching (lcbp, large print, midsize)
the other for learning and marking (TakeNote bible fron nelson)

oops! i forgot: i always carry an extra one (HCSB) to give away to the person who accepts christ when i witness (its rare when they dont, all credit to JC!!)

I SAY HCSB because i have bought so many of them to give away
(but i will not use it or give away in the future after i rid of them all)
yes, so easy to read ..... but, alas! --- they sidetracked too much

I presently am using 2 study Bibles (the ESV & the NIV). I do this because to get the joy of the translations.

The one I have with me all the time is the one on my android phone.

Tecarta Bible with NKJV, NASB, KJV and ESV installed.

Otherwise my favorite is my recently rebound Believer's Study Bible NKJV.

I can remember when just being able to have ONE was a problem.

I will always love the KJV for the beauty, language, and seeming trustworthiness of translation.

I do read others, but it's pretty common to find me reading with the KJV by my side and going back and forth between the two to get a better picture of something I may not understand in one or the other.

Never really thought of which one to take to church. Typically, all the verses are up on the screen so there's not much of a point in having one. It's good in that I have a habit of reading whatever we're told to, but then I keep going and quit listening to whoever is speaking because I get engrossed in the passage and have thoughts come to me and start looking up other stuff and before I know it, it's over and I don't know what the message was.
