According to recent threads, there are some who might be opposed to medical treatment(s) and therapy for those who are ADHD (or ADD), OPD (oppositional personality disorder), OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)... (any other include here).

A question then needs to be clarified.

Who would consider it righteous to "self medicate" with an addictive intoxicant such as wine, yet be critical of those who under the supervision of a professional refuse non-addictive medications?

And yes, there are addictive forms of medications, but these are highly regulated by three parties. The doctor, the pharmacy, the DEA - each gets a copy of the prescription and the medication has time limits on dispensing and refilling and on the number dispensed.

But, let's keep this thread to the question asked. (As if that is likely to occur)

As prescribed is a phrase often used in the substance abuse field. You mentioned the controls behind prescribed medications and they should reflect the best practice as determined between the researcher, manufacturers, regulating authority and physicians. Dosages are not determined arbitrarily. Self-medicating is not limited to taking a med or intoxicant on your own. It also extends to taking a prescription in a way other than as prescribed. That can include taking a higher dosage (if a little bit helps a lot should help a bunch) or smaller dosages or ceasing the medication all together. I was feeling better so I stopped taking xxxxx.

There's an old saying, "Liquor's quicker." Something to that. Oxycontin on the street is around $7-10 for 10mg. It can get to be an expensive habit very quickly. Unless you're drinking Grey Goose you can get quite intoxicated for less than $10.

The root question to ask is why does the individual choose to self medicate? My experience tells me that if you ask 100 people you will get 100 different answers. I don't have any hard stats handy but when I was working in the field the most often heard reason was pain. How that was defined was as varied as the folks you were talking to. Some folks chose to escape into a blurry world instead of dealing with their problems. Some had physical or mental issues that needed professional intervention. Some folks got involved in physically addictive substances and got out of control.

It is incumbent to remember that every person you talk to is a unique and unrepeatable miracle of God. These are real people not theoretical examples out of a textbook. Their lives are complex, they may or may not have any exposure to the Gospel, and/or there may be underlying physical ailments unaddressed. The approach should be as individual as the person. Above all, they need prayer, compassion and understanding from you. They are keenly aware of their failures. Brow beating and condemnation don't have a place here.

The answer is no it is not righteous. First off no drug can heal the sin which lies inside. The proof of this is we all saw a person on this board who uses drugs to keep them from sin and he still went off spewing evil.
Drugs never fix the problem when dealing with sin, they only cover it and make more sin. Confession and forsaking is the answer not drugs when an individual is seeking to overcome sin.
I do feel that drugs can be used to contol problem prisoners or people under the jurisdiction of the legal system. As for anintoxicant according to the bible God does permit it for someone who is dying to releave the pain or it can be used in a moderate manner for someone who has a physical medical problem such as Timothy, but it is never to be used as a way to control the behavior of a person unto righteousness. As I said I do believe it can be used for criminals if they need controled, but not as a tool to mask the sin of a believer as that is all it does, mask the problem.

    You are quite the hypcrite.

You condemn me and judge me for the way i responded to your own evil posts.

If you want to see evil, just read the evil you spew yourself.

Do me a favor and just keep your opinions about me and my illness to yourself.

For what it's worth my illness is treated by a mineral that replaces the chemicals my brain is missing.

I do not take any intoxicating drug nor do I drink alcohol, so FAL was wrong to bring me into this.

seekingthetruth I love you and I am praying for you as well as telling you the truth, Drugs mask while confession and forsaking heal.Drugs are fine for those who are out of control, needing to be controled because they refuse to deal with it, but they never fix the real issue the heart and what I did was point that fact out in your case. You proved everything I was saying. The drugs let you down, but confession and forsaking overcoming the sin problem will never let us down. We are to be overcomings, not dependent on drugs, which mask the truth, to live the Christian life. God bless

That's a cheap shot, and worthy of an apology.

To those who seek to hide the truth everything is cheap.

You take someone's spiritual patience to the extreme. It takes every fiber of my being to not get another three points on my account. If I had my way, you would have been banned weeks ago for flaming, trolling, and border line heresy.
