I really don’t know how I feel about this…my son plays baseball for a 10U team and we play a team that also has a girl on the team…my son pitches and I reminded him that regardless who’s at the plate, you pitch the same, if the girl gets hit with a wild 10 year-old pitch, then that’s baseball…I don’t know why this girl (or her parents is my guess) feels she needs to play on an all boys team, when there are girls softball leagues that are just as competitive as any of the boys leagues…and the thing about it where I live is there’s a sports league suited for your sons or daughters speed…but it’s not like I lost any sleep over it…But the Church in the article has a standard they abide by and I have to respect their decision not to play when the title was on the line, even if I think it’s somewhat silly…

Even when I was a practicing Baptist, I played softball for the Church and the league we played didn’t allow women on the teams…it was an all male team…when most Churches in our area were co-ed.

I don't understand why they drew this line. There is no biblical reason for it that I can think of...but then Roman Catholics do all kinds of stuff that has no biblical basis.

The article explained that it is a matter of not putting their male students in a position of possibly treating a girl with less than complete respect.

Also the article explained that this is a schismatic group that broke from the Roman Catholic Church some time ago... so they aren't Roman Catholic.

They aren't Roman Catholics. They are a seperated church under the Saint Pius X society. They are schizmatics. However, I understand the desire to teach young men in today's society to have respect for girls. Such as never hit a girl or take advantage of them. In sports these values can get skewed where taking advantage and homogenizing them with boys may make them loose the care or respect men should have for women.

The boys need coaching, not knee jerk isolationism. It is an opportunity for another of sports many life lessons and they missed it.

Would you say then that all school sports teams should be co-ed?

    If not, why not?

Like Agnus Dei, I wonder why there is a girl on the boy's baseball team. Out of respect the girl didn't play in the regular season games vs. Our Lady of Sorrows team, but now that it's the championship game she decides her respect for the Sorrows team doesn't hold.

I coach youth baseball. When my (now) 14 year old was 12 years old we played a team with a girl on it. She played first base and routinely would stand on top of the base with both feet when fielding throws from infielders. My son was beating out a hit to the SS and slowed down when approaching first base because this girl was blocking his access to the base. Had it been a boy he would have run over the guy, but since it was a girl he felt he shouldn't get into a collision with her. I wondered about a coach that wouldn't correct how this girl would play first base and could only conclude it was deliberate. I had to tell my guys that if she does that again they are to run over her. (Before you ask or comment, it's legal to do this.)

I think this is the type of situation the Lady of Sorrows team was trying to avoid, and I don't blame them.

Because those of us with a Baptist background never do anything "that has no biblical basis."

    Another thought....

You don't think that holding to principles even at the cost of not winning a championship is a life lesson learned?

[SIZE=+0]Yes I do. There can be physical contact in that sport so I can understand why they might not want a female on an opposing team. I know of a young man who lost a state championship in wrestling because he would not wrestle a girl at the championships.
The bible tells us that women are not to wear the things of a man so I think the principle they are holding is biblical.

It is an example of adiaphora

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adiaphora

Adiaphora in Christianity refer to matters not regarded as essential to faith, but nevertheless as permissible for Christians or allowed in church. What is specifically considered adiaphora depends on the specific theology in view.

And what is your reasoning for such a sarcastic remark?

Girls are people to and you can play hard and play fair with people different than you.

To me it is not a moral issue and not worth even thinking about.

The exaple was already given of a girl player standing in the baseline and while it may be within the rules to knock her off her feet and therefore "fair" the school apparently does not believe that would be the act of a gentleman towards a lady and did not wish to put their student players in such a position.

I would hope that lesson was learned in grade school. A guy can agree with your statement and yet also decide they prefer to play baseball with guys.
