A.W. Pink - The Doctrine of Sanctification

    Sanctifcation: I have heard about every definition there is on this subject and believe me there have been several. But I am reminded of a testimony of a dear lady in the church where I was raised. This was back when the mid-week gathering was referred to as prayer meeting and most everyone gave an account of what the Lord had done for them or visa versa. She said "I'm saved, sanctified and haven't committed a sin in 25 years". This was 70 to 75 years ago when I was just a small child but I remember as if were yesterday.

    I can certainly understand remembering a statement like that. That sort of personal claim to sinlessness may suggest spiritual pride (and the public announcement of personal sinlessness certainly suggests it), and it definitely appears to fly in the face of I John 1:8. While sinless perfection is the goal, I'm pretty certain that the Scriptures indicate that this is not obtained in this life, even in the most upright of believers. I have benefited from this work of Pink, in that I feel that he did a good job in providing a Scriptural definition of sanctification and the means of its attainment (hint: no process whereby we have a right to boast of our sinlessness).
