I was discussing my opinion on the decline in the popularity of President Obama with my LT, who gave me some reasons as to why he thinks the President will win a second term. Being an officer in the Army, he did not tell me who he was voting for, only that he thought the President would win.

I was going to give some background on my LT, but I decided against it. I don't have his permission to talk of his accomplishments to others. Suffice it to say, once his military career is over, he has opportunities in pretty much any government agency he wishes. I say this to simply point out that he has an understanding of what is going on.

Here are some points he hit on, as well as some of my own thoughts thrown in:

    1. The Economy
Basically, he believes the President will use former administrations as a scapegoat in the economy area (this will be a recurring theme in these points, by the way). He could easily persuade people that the plunge began before he took the office, and let them know that he has a plan to turn things around. As we know, the promise of change is often enough to convince people.

    2. The Surge of Troops into War
He could claim that the surge was necessary in order to prevent a longer engagement overseas. It was an unpopular decision to push so many troops into Afghanistan, but this is being followed by a drastic reduction in troops overseas. On my FOB alone, we are reducing our number from around 18,000 troops to roughly 6,000 troops this year. This pullout will look really good during his campaign.

    3. The Kill of Osama Bin Laden
It is expected that the President will use the kill of Bin Laden to his advantage during the campaign. This is old news to people, however. Anyone with any sense at all knew as soon as it happened that we hadn't heard the last of that story.

    4. Homeless Rate of Veterans
Here is a little known fact that could possibly surface this year. The VA has released information that the homeless rate among veterans has been reduced from about 150,000 in 2009 to only about 45,000 at the end of 2011. We could argue all day on whether the President had anything to do with this, but that's not the reason for this thread. The fact is that it happened, and he could capitalize on it.

    5. Obamacare
Whether we like it or not, Obamacare as voted on by Congress was not how it was written up originally. Therein lies another scapegoat and a possible PR turnaround. With the unpopularity of Obamacare, he could easily remind people that Congress added so many changes to it that it wasn't his plan. As a campaign theme, he could promise to fix it.

    6. Unrest Among Other Middle Eastern Countries
As a fear tactic, the President could talk about peace talks in the middle east, and tell people that a change in government could undo everything he's worked for.

    7. Possible Years of Peace
With the pullout of troops in the middle east, the President could easily tell people that under his administration we are heading for years of peace. This type of talk is backed up by the reconfiguring of the military (especially the Army) to a smaller, better trained force.

    8. Better Border Security Measures
With the troops pulling out of combat, and without our focus on war, a promise could be made that we could better focus on the border, and securing our own nation against arms/drug runners. he could even go so far as to state that we would secure our borders for a better control over terrorist activities that would enter the US from bordering countries.

Keep in mind that this is not a "Bash Obama" thread, and that the idea here is not to talk about how bad he is. I just want to get some thoughts about how valid of a strategy this would be. Again, not really whether the points are valid, but whether using these points would be a valid strategy.

From my own observation, I don't think that the President is as despised by the general public as he is made out to be on this board. It is easy to hear a lot of people around you talking, and if the people around you are all saying the same thing, to assume that you are hearing the majority opinion. However, this is not always an accurate assessment. It seems that the average person isn't concerned with what has happened, but the promise of what will happen.

    What say you?

    I disagree.

    1. Obama now has a failed record to be accountable to. In the first election he did not have a record to be accountable for and floated on platitudes and high promises.

    2. In his current campaign mode he avoids addressing his record for the most part as he knows it is weak.

    3. He has become shrill rather than positive.

    4. He is being seen for who he really is which has lost much support among the young and women.

    5. At this point an incumbent should be farther along in the polls.

I agree that there is a good chance he will be re-elected. (Remembering that the votes will be tallied in Spain with no way to verify the votes, and that the Electoral College actually elects the President.) Just this morning at the post office, engaging with a couple of seniors or soon to be seniors, (strangers), they were talking about how everyone needs to pay their "fair share." I countered that is true, about 50% of Americans pay no tax and even get EIC and get tax refunds and "everyone needs to have skin in the game." I was quickly corrected, they meant people of a certain "income level" should have to pay more, the Bush tax cuts have brought economic ruin to our country. Then it was their turn to step up to the counter and off they went.

So, there you go. People believe the myths presented to them by the major media and don't seem to be interested in the facts. What a rude awakening EVERYONE who isn't a socialist will have if he is re-elected - Obama Unleashed!!!

If he wins, it will be for one of 2 reasons only.

Democrats will have finally made more people dependent on government than than there are workers and taxpayers.

    or

There are simply too many voters that are ignorant and uninformed. Stupidity simply cannot be fixed.

Woody I think those things you mentioned are sub-reasons for the possibility for him being re-elected, but I am convinced if he is, and I think it is highly probable especially with Romney courting people like Donald Trump, it will because of the same reason that we do not have someone running against him who is conservative and that reason is the failure of the church.
In other words I see this president as a result of the failing of the church and his re-election the result of its on-going falling away. Even if Mitt Romeny should win, which I do not think he will, I am not so sure we will praising his leadership and want to claim a victory.

When I was in the service during Nixon's first term, we thought there was not a chance he would be reelected. As it turned out, we were half right. He won in 72, but left office before half his term was over.

As for this election, I would have agreed with your LT, until the last several weeks. The focal point of this election is the economy and jobs. When I was in, it was Vietnam and civil unrest.

Friday was a good example that points to a Romney victory. The jobs report produced less than half of what was expected. The market went tumbling. People with mature 401Ks lost thousands in one day. That sways votes. Of course, five months of time is a long time in politics, and things could turn around.

Presidents are elected by the electoral college. Last time, Obama carried Indiana, Florida, Virginia, and North Carolina. He will lose those four states this time. In the Democratic Primary last week in Kentucky, his opponent was uncommitted. In the 13 far Western Kentucky counties, Obama lost to uncommitted in 12 of the 13. In some counties, he lost 65-35. Other states that Romney could pick off are Pennsyvalnia, Colorado, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Nevada.

I would be interested in seeing an electoral college map of how your LT thinks Obama will win.

Not that the LT is wrong; but as was pointed out, more people are going to be fixated on the situation here at home. The issue always has been the economy, and both candidates need to run on a ticket of creating jobs and improving the economy. Border security is not an issue to the guy next door; unless you can tie it to his job security.

Only one reason why President Obama will be re-elected...the Republicans are nominating Romney.

    That's about it kids.

Now, I am going to say some crazy stuff here, but this is just my thoughts.

First, way back in 2008 before the election, I actually wondered if Obama were the antichrist. I know, sounds crazy, but he fits the biblical description in many ways. The scriptures call the antichrist the "Assyrian". We know that Obama is of Muslim descent, so he could possibly fit this description. I do not know his exact descent.

The scriptures describe the antichrist as a person who will take power by flatteries, now this is where Obama really fits the bill. I remember Obama speaking to the Germans in 2008 and the crowd was hysterical. There were women with tears pouring down their faces. It was this "worship" of Obama that started me thinking he miight be the antichrist in the first place. Remember, he was "The ONE", he was going to turn back global warming and keep the seas from rising. He was called "The Messiah" by many.

Again, I know all this sounds crazy, I admit that, and I have since softened on my view, primarily because Obama is not all that smart as he was first portrayed, his "misstatement" concerning Poland last week is a good example.

Nevertheless, the scriptures say the antichrist will have a deadly wound to his head, yet he will live and the world will "wonder" after him.

It occurred to me that this might not mean physical death, but political death. We see Obama down in the polls, and Romney on the rise. Obama is especially down with independents, very crucial for his re-election.

So, what I am saying is that Obama may lose this election. This may be the wound to his head the scriptures speak of. He might be considered politically dead.

But the scriptures say the antichrist will rise from the dead and the world will wonder. Could it be possible that somehow Obama will lose, and yet wrest power back again?

I admit I could be wrong on all of this, and most likely am. Folks thought Hitler was the anitchrist, folks have thought others were the antichrist. So, I could be wrong as well.

But sooner or later, the true antichrist will come. I really believe Jesus will return very soon for very many reasons, it is TIME that truly makes me wonder if Obama is this man of sin.

I could give other reasons, the scriptures show the antichrist will have no regard for women. It is true that Obama is married and has children, but it is also true there is much evidence he was a practicing homosexual in the past. There have been many homosexuals that have married and had children to hide their sexual orientation.

So, now you can call me a nutcase if you want.

All this to say that I think he will lose this election, but he is not finished yet. He will be back.

Obama is not the antichrist, but it is clear he is antichrist. He will win the election because there is no one on the GOP side that will bring out the voters or entice the independent vote that would be needed to get him out of office.

Not so, the latest polls show Romney has a 10 point lead with independents.

    Made up. Completely untrue.

As a theoretical matter, I would agree that everyone with an income should pay Federal income taxes. However, it's important to note that those with lower incomes pay more as a proportion of their income in sales taxes, payroll taxes, gas tax, and government fees such as vehicle registration fees.

Barack Obama is not a socialist- not even close. He's a centrist Democrat.

    Yes, you sure are.

Muslim isn't a race or ethnicity.

I'm floored by this. Out of all the nutty things I've heard people say about Mr. Obama, this one is the craziest. I have honestly never heard this one before, so I'm not sure what to say.

I agree, five months is an eternity in politics. There is no telling what might happen this summer. If Israel or the U.S.A. were to attack Iran, folks would rally around the President. Folks do not like to change leadership in the middle of a crisis.

By the way, I see your avatar of Slash, I am a big fan (guitar player). You do know he copied Marc Bolan with that top-hat don't you?

He even played Buick MacKane, one of Marc's best songs.

As good as Slash is, Marc's solo on this song is unbeatable.

Oh yeah, Buick Mackane was the real deal, and Slash had a ton of respect for him.

I'm probably a little older than you, I was a big fan of T Rex when I was a kid.

But, back to the subject at hand. I am very eager to see the results of this election, and if Obama loses, I am very interested in what he will do.

With all of the chaos in Europe right now, he might take power over there. They are crazy about him, more so than at home. If the European union breaks up, who knows what could happen?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGoMyQTyATw

Look at the crowd, for a man who was completely unknown just a few months earlier, incredible.

He kept calling himself "A citizen of the world".

I'm telling you, this guy is not normal.

The first time I heard someone accused of being the anti-christ (sure there were ones before this), was President Kennedy the ac and VP Johnson the fp. Then, it was Nixon ac and Kissinger fp. Lastly it was Reagan as the ac.

If the election were held today, after the nonsense Friday, there is path for an electoral victory for Romney.

I have made this suggestion before, and got no real response. We all, a collection of us, should make some kind of prediction now, keep them recorded, and do it every month until a last one say one week before the election. All it would take is two totals, predicted popular vote and predicted electoral vote.

    Google it.

Three of his supposed former partners have been murdered execution style with no known suspects.

One former partner wrote a book about his exploits with Obama.

This information was out even before the last election.

    It was just pooh-pooed.
