In order to provide some honest transparency which would accurately reflect the doctrines preached from each side as well as would also reveal the differences, how would you name each side so people would be able to knnow what they are truly getting into?

    I might suggest:

    VG-SBC (Volitional Grace SBC)

    And

    PG-SBC (Predetermined Grace SBC)

Though a split isn't going to happen, the more historically appropriate labels would be:

    General Baptist
    Particular Baptist

    You beat me to it.

Historic, accurate and not pejorative toward either position. .

Eh, those ancient titles carry a lot of baggage and really don’t openly and simply reveal one’s ultimate standings on their doctrines of grace. I think we could do better than that…

Straight out of Southern Baptist Founder (the first Secretary of the Foreign Mission Board of the SBC) James B. Taylor's book Virginia Baptist Ministers, penned in the 1850s:

Who have you been reading? These titles actually describe the situation appropriately without all the baggage of figuring out what side gets to label the other side. Frankly the terms general and particular have to deal directly with the central issue and that is the efficacy of the atonement. That is the issue here.

I don't see too many of my Reformed brethren lining up to bicker about the perseverance of the saints. This debate is, essentially, about the atonement. Historically we baptists have had this discussion before. Maybe we should go ahead and pick up the historical terms so we can understand each other...and ourselves. :)

This is good. Thanks for posting it.

This foolishness that the SBC was "overwhelmingly" Reformed in its birth is error-laden and historically uninformed. Its pushed by the guys with "Founders Ministry" and isn't accurate.

Well, actually the issue here is that it would be interesting to see how each side would label themselves. I anticipate that those who hold to limited atonement would be much less forthright in revealing those non-volitional aspects concerning grace when labeling themselves than those who hold that all men have the volition to accept grace in that the offer of atonement genuinely applies to all. Hence, a title which would, “openly and simply reveal one’s ultimate standings on their doctrines of grace.”

In the meantime it might be fun to see how one side labels the other.

The General Baptists already exist, mostly in the Midwest. There are a few around here in Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois.

The General Baptists take that name for obvious reasons. They believe in a general atonement.

They also believe that one may turn away from his salvation and be lost.

Many Southern Baptists could be General Baptists, except for the eternal security issue.

    GA-SBC (General Atonement SBC)

    And

    PA-SBC (Peculiar Atonement SBC)

    How about:

    Monergistic Baptist

    and

    Synergistic Baptist?

Synergism: the doctrine that the human will cooperates with the Holy Ghost in the work of regeneration.

Monergism: the doctrine that the Holy Ghost acts independently of the human will in the work of regeneration.

Most definitely defines it in a nutshell.

One salvation that has eternal aspects (election, redemption, regeneration, glorification, etc.) and temporal aspects (conversion, discipleship, sanctification, etc.).

    Definition of the two sides:
    Calvinist: I was saved before I wasn't
Non-Cal: The sun is shining, the birds are singing, what a great day to get saved.
