It Gives Repentance unto Life !

Godly Repentance must come from a Godly Source, that is the kind of Repentance that worketh Salvation ! 2 Cor 7:10

For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

This Type of Repentance is not in the nature of man because we are by nature ungodly ! Rom 5:6

But Godly Repentance is given from a Godly Source which is the Lord Jesus Christ. He gives those He died for Godly Repentance Acts 5:31

31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

Note: Christ is not ones Saviour if He does not give them Repentance unto Life ! Acts 11:18

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

You see, repentance is the fruit of the New Birth which is the Fruit of Christ's Resurrection which is fruit of His Death !

All for whom Christ died and rose again, are by His Resurrection begotten again ! Peter writes about it here 1 Pet 1:3

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

The words begotten us again in the greek is
    anagennaō and means:

to produce again, be born again, born anew

    2) metaph. to have one's mind changed so that he lives a new life and one conformed to the will of God

Notice in addition of it meaning born anew or produce again, it also means to have one's mind changed !

Now this is significant because the word repentance Acts 5:31 is the greek word

    metanoia which means:

a change of mind, as it appears to one who repents, of a purpose he has formed or of something he has done
And so that is why it is said that Jesus gives Repentance to His Israel or Elect out of both israel and the gentiles.

This is True because, Repentance, Godly Repentance is a product of the New Birth !

Also in Heb the writer has repentance being something suitable for those who are Babes in Christ Heb 5:11-6:1

11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

6 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

You see, Repentance from dead works and faith toward God or Christ as Per Acts 20:21

21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Those things are milk and milk is for babes 1 Pet 2:1

Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

This confirms that the Apostles Preached Repentance in hope that New Born babes, who have been begotten again by the Resurrection of Christ from the Dead would be converted !

Those of you who believe that repentance is something man does as a condition to get saved, you are deceived and you are a deceiver, for Christ gets the joy of every sinner that Repents Lk 15:7

7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Thats Christ Joy in the accomplishment of His Finished work, it brings the Sheep back to God !

Regeneration is giving a CHANGE OF HEART - a NEW HEART. Repentance is merely the human side of regeneration. Jesus explained it in John 3:18-20. The unregeneated man loves darkness and hates light. Regeneration changes this love life. Regeneration gives a love for light and hatred for darkness. The change from love of darkness to hatred of darkness is "repentance" and the change from hatred of light to love light is faith. The godly sorrow is the new heart's response to sin.

Yes, that is where repentance comes from. The word means a change of mind !

This change of mind is the effect of the New Birth 1 Pet 1:3

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

This begotten us again is the New Birth or being born again or anew 1 Pet 1:23

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Now the word in the greek is anagennaō and means:

to produce again, be born again, born anew

    2) metaph. to have one's mind changed so that he lives a new life and one conformed to the will of God

Only after one is born anew can they change their mind about God and the Things of God, and then begin to live a New Life by Faith !

So conversion to God is a Fruit of Christ's Resurrection which is the Fruit of His Death.

So the end in Christ dying for the elect is realized which was to 1 Pet 3:18

18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

    1 Pet 1:25

25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

This word return is the greek word epistrephō and means:

    transitively

    a) to turn to

    1) to the worship of the true God

    b) to cause to return, to bring back

    1) to the love and obedience of God

Also the word is in the passive voice in the greek ! So they are being returned, by the effects of the New Birth, which is the Holy Spirit working in them both to will and to do of God's good pleasure !

Also, its not the old man that is coming to God or that repents, but the man that has been born of God ! The New Man !

Yes, Paul instructed timothy to be patient against false teachers, and to teach the Truth, and God's Elect will be granted Repentance to the acknowleding of the Truth. Titus 1:1

    Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

Whenever God's Elect are born again, they will receive a New propensisty to discern the Truth, which is the Holy Spirit in them teaching them the Truth 1 Jn 2:27

27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

How does Grace reign through Jesus Christ Our Lord ?

    Rom 5:19-21

19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

How does this Grace reign through Jesus Christ ? It Reigns by the New Birth. It reigns because Christ Death and Resurrection communicates to those that He died for, a New Birth as Per 1 Pet 1:3

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

This having been begotten again which means:anagennaō

to produce again, be born again, born anew

    2) metaph. to have one's mind changed so that he lives a new life and one conformed to the will of God

The produce means to create again ! God by New Birth Creates those Christ died for and satisfied law and Justice for, He Creates them again as a Gift a New Man !

    Eph 4:24

And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

And by this New Creation we are given these 2 Pet 1:3

3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

These things are given or bestowed in the New Birth. One of those all things He gives that pertains Life and Godliness is Godly Repentance. Repentance is a Godliness 2 Cor 7:8-10

9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

This Repentance is of a godly a divine nature 2 Pet 1:4

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

The divine nature given in the New Birth or New Creation, and through this New nature we escape the corruption of the Old Nature we received by our fall in Adam. And so we are given by this Repentance to life Acts 11:18

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

We pray you in Christ's stead be ye reconciled to God.

    2 Cor 5:18-21

17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

    18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

When it is said by the Apostle here "we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God" this appeal or summons is going out to those who have had Spiritual Life communicated to them, in fact they were already New Creatures in Christ vs 17, and now God by means of the Truth, the Word of God or of Reconciliation [accomplished], in fact, the very voice of Christ through the preaching, as stated, we pray you in Christ's stead" be ye reconciled to God" ! And of course their hearing Christ's voice, faith cometh by Hearing !

So this passage is not as the false believers present it, as if God is pleading and begging men and women every where to accept Christ and get saved.

In fact, when they said be ye reconciled, in the greek its a imperative [command] and it is in the passive voice, that is the subjects are being converted by the word of reconciliation ! Its what Paul says here Acts 26:18

18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

They, the Apostles were the princes that would rule in Judgment with the King Isa 32:1

Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.

So they, could pray or beseech in Christ stead or behalf, being God ordained ambassadors for Him and ruling with Him.

It was unto them only that Jesus said :

    Matt 16:18-19

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Paul was binding His Corinthian hearers , with that Apostolic Authority from Christ !

Faith and Repentance are a one package deal !

    Matt 21:32

32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

When God or Christ gives Repentance, He also accompanies that with Faith, for Repentance is but the signal of Faith or believing or it is given in order to believe, as Per The Text Acts 20:21

21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Elect are given Repentance [a change of mind] about lies and false religions or dead works, and given Faith to believe the Truth. An Illustration of how Repentance works when applied by the New Birth is here in 1 Thess 1:9

    9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols[Repentance] to serve the living and true God[Faith];

BTW that word turned is the greek word epistrephō and means:

    transitively

    a) to turn to

    1) to the worship of the true God

    b) to cause to return, to bring back

    1) to the love and obedience of God

    2) to the love for the children

    3) to love wisdom and righteousness

    2) intransitively

    a) to turn to one's self

    b) to turn one's self about, turn back

    c) to return, turn back, come back

It is used in 1 Pet 2:25 here

25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

Here it is in the passive voice, in 1 Thess 1:9 it has no voice but is an aorist indicative, meaning it is making a statement of fact, that is the turning occurred or will occur, but the 1 Peter reference gives us to understand that the ones turning are being turned and that by the Gift of Repentance being applied to them, and yes, they do become active in this. Its like the Prophet said of old Jer 31:18

I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God.

God given Repentance turns us from Idols or false religions , be they whatever, and turns us to serving [by faith] the True and Living God, for there is no serving God acceptably without God given Faith Heb 11:6.

So basically, whom God gives Repentance, He is giving them full conversion, in which the elect are active, but they are active because of having been born again, as being a New Creature. The Elect are active in their conversion only as they have been born of incorruptible seed 1 Pet 1:23

23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

or as they have been begotten again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 1 Pet 1:3

    begotten again means:

to produce again, be born again, born anew

    2) metaph. to have one's mind changed so that he lives a new life and one conformed to the will of God

That is exactly what 1 Thess 1:9 is describing ! So where there is Repentance given, so it is Faith given Acts 5:31

31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance [and faith] to Israel, and[Knowledge of] forgiveness of sins.

Faith and Repentance after Spirit has been poured out!

Now in some scriptures it appears Faith goes before Repentance as here in Zech 12:10

10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look[With Faith] upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn[with Godly Sorrow] for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Now however it may be, we know also from here that both Faith and Repentance are fruits of having had the Spirit of Grace Poured out upon them Titus 3:6 and having partook of a Sovereign Work of the Spirit bears this out. NOW it reads the Spirit of Grace, but it could very well read, the Grace of the Spirit. Now we can see that both Repentance and Faith accompany one another, and add to the fact that both God and Christ are said to give Repentance Acts 5:31

31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

    Acts 11:18

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

And now in Zech 12:10 we see it being the Spirit and His Grace giving Repentance, for we can safely say that the Triune God gives Repentance to His Elect, as Christ gives both Repentance and Remission of sins, so by Christ given Faith they embrace the forgiveness of their sins !

    Covenant Promises Given !

    Not a conditional Covenant !

The Covenant of Grace or Everlasting Covenant is not a conditional Covenant with men as some do falsely teach, they teach that its conditioned upon the sinners faith and repentance, that these are conditions men must meet in order to partake of its benefits and blessings, however they do lie and prove to be false witnesses; For Faith and Repentance are not conditions but Blessings of the Covenant, but Blessings that were promised in it, for when God promised the gift of a New Heart and New Spirit, included in them are both Faith and Repentance, hence thats why its stated clearly as the result of those blessings being bestowed, the recipients thereof shall keep His statues and Judgments to do them ! Ezk 36:24-27

24 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.

25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Therefore to Repent and to believe in Christ are commandments to the Born Again Elect of God, in order to manifest the Covenant Blessings of keeping and Walking in God's Statues to DO them !

Paul commanded the Phillipian Jailor to Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and though shalt be saved, meaning that his obedience to the command would but prove that he had been the recipient of a Heart of Flesh and that God's Spirit was within him, that he may do this command !

So Faith and Repentance are not conditions to receiving the Covenant Blessings but to Evidence them !

    Repentance from dead works !

    Heb 6:1

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

Repentance from dead works is something a man does, however the moving cause is the efficacious blood of Christ Heb 9:14

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

The Blood of Christ by the Power of the Holy Spirit purges ones conscience FROM dead works, TO serve the Living God !

Credit must go the Blood of Christ for turning His People from idols and dead man made religion and tradition to serve the Living God !
