Now that there is nothing to keep the Federal Government from mandating the purchase by the citizenry of anything it wants, what is to stop it from requiring us to buy that brilliant piece of automotive engineering - the Chevy Volt?

What color will you choose (as if you will have a choice)?

The Supreme Court very clearly ruled that the Congress can not compel you to purchase stuff. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act's individual mandate was upheld as an exercise of Congressional taxing authority.

Not having read it yet, but going by what I'm hearing, it's buy it or pay the tax. The idea of a penalty for noncompliance makes it a mandate.

Just a guess, but I think they'll come in only one color- Democrat Blue.

Will they come equipped with a big wind-up key?

I guess next they'll introduce a solar-powered car. Imagine how much that'll save us!

    It's called double-think ala George Orwell 1984.

You don't have to buy it but if you don't buy it you must pay a tax for not buying it.

And how does it not set a precedent for the Driver Affordable Auto Act to mandate that individuals either purchase a Chevy Volt or pay a tax?

As I understand it, I believe you are required to "retrofit" your garage electricity to sustain these types of cars. So, that could come as a requirement, as well as a "tax."

Also, I believe I read where Chevy Volts are responsible for overheating in the garage and causing fires.

Perhaps someone knows if these things are true or not.

I suppose it does. However, the fact that the government can use a power it has in a dumb way doesn't mean it doesn't have that power.

Something to that effect was reported by Fox News on 6/27.

Maybe we need to just resurrect those mid-70's Ford Pintos. Maybe put some EPA big wigs in its front seats and then rear end them with one of those big stretch Hummers.

First I'm laughing out loud because of Arbo's "Democrat Blue" statement...then you go and remind me of all those jokes about which is more militarily effective: A tank, or a bunch of Ford Pintos driving backwards towards you....

There's another car (can't remember the name--never heard of it before) that claims up to 300 miles on a single charge. The Chevy Volt can't go anywhere near that distance on a single charge.

If I was still driving (had to give it up due to eyes failing from diabetes) and wanted an electric car, I wouldn't buy one until someone actual came up with an ELECTRIC car that constantly produces its own electric power without having to plug it in and then drive a few miles and plug it in again to keep going.

Imagine going across country in the "electric" cars available now. You would have to stop at every gas station to plug in and recharge. I want one that NEVER needs recharging, because it recharges itself. THAT would be a REAL electric car.
