True Story

    My mom is 87 and these last few years have increased her dementia. My dad went ot be with the Lord over 20 years ago. I never heard a cross word pass between them. They were married for 47 years. She will often talk about having a conversation with him and I just let it go. She was heart broken when he died, so i don't tell her any different.

    This afternoon as I was with her, she got this serious look on her face. She said she hadn't heard from my dad in a while and she wanted me to do her a favor. So I told her I would. She wanted me to find out if my dad had a girlfriend and if that was why she hadn't seen him. I took her hand and said, "Mom, dad died a long time ago." Without missing a beat, she said, "then ask him if he had a gf before he died." :smilewinkgrin:

    Later on, I told her the doctors would not be able to perform surgery on her because she was too old. She said, "I am not too old, I am 49 years old. " I said, "OK mom, but I am 61." Again, she told me, "I was a young mother." and went on talking.

    Life with a mom with dementia can sometimes be amusing.

    That's funny, and so familiar. I helped to care for my Mom and Mamaw who both had dementia in their last years. A lot of the incidents that happened were not so funny at the time, but now we can look back and laugh, and miss caring for them too. Both were ready to go when the time came though.

    One Sunday after church we were all getting the dinner ready, I had brought some greens in from the garden and Mamaw wanted to clean them, Dad told me to do it (he knew better, he didn't trust her cleaning job), I insisted because she wanted to help, he said OK but for me to watch her close.

    At the end of the meal there was one last gob of greens in the pan, Dad reached in with a fork and put them on his plate and, EGAD! There laid a Japanese Beetle belly up in the bottom of the pan. Whew, talk about glares and stares directed at me from about six others around the table. Mamaw was happy to have helped though.

    Funny!

    I have a friend who brought his mom for Christmas. She would open a gift and laugh, then slip off into her own world, then all of a sudden see her gift again and laugh. She did that for an hour. He said she enjoyed Christmas immensely!

    After my dad had a stroke, he did some strange things. (1) He tried putting his shirt on over his feet and couldn't understand why it got stuck. (2) He tried to warm up some food on the gas stove in a plastic bowl. I will admit that the stroke improved his personality.
