Saw the big movie tonight with a bunch from the singles class. No question the violence and realistic violence was far more severe than the older Batman movies. Val Kimmer & George Cloony's batman's were more comic than realistic, the 2 by Michael Keaton were darker and more violent, but nothing compared to what I saw tonight. I do not know for certain if James Holmes was mentally ill and devils were speaking to him, or if he did this all on his own without the aid of devils. Based on what we know it appears devils were NOT involved and the shooter acted on his own, and is not mentally ill. Regardless this should be a wakeup call about movie violence, but as usual no one will listen and movies will continue to get even more violent. I have a horror film from the 70's and in it only a few die and this one is rated R. However the film I saw tonight was far more violent and got the PG-13 rating.

I won't take the time to look up the numbers, because I've posted them in a similar thread on the effects of video game violence. The fact is, violence in video games and movies do not make people act violently. In fact, the studies show the opposite. Look the numbers up. Violent crimes have gone down, and are at an all time low.

I know that this link is about video game violence, but it's the same thing.

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

Not because of video games. That does not mean I think they have any place in the Christian's life, but placing blame in video games for someone's actions is no different then blaming alcohol, drugs or a so called "mental illness" for someone sinful actions..

    Yea, this is exactly right.

Violence is less in the WORLD today that it has been for most of it's history.

I wish guys would not preach this kind of mess. It discredits Christianity among people who are intelligent.

Ignorant people may flock to this kind of preaching, but sensible people will be turned away, in my opinion.

No there is not less violence in the world today there is simply no direct correlation between violent video games and violence.

No, there is less violence in the world today than there has been throughout most of its history.

We flip out over this incident in Colorado because we are not as accustomed to such violence as people were in days gone by.

Two thousand years ago it was a pass-time of the most civilized nation in the world to feed people to lions, burn them by the dozens at the stake, force them to fight to the bloody end.

Titus, in 70 AD, slaughtered 1.2 million Jews at once.

There were perils of robbers on some Roman roads so bad that one had to employ a band of soldiers to escort them if they hoped to survive the journey. And this is not in backwater nations- no. This is the most civilized nation in the world in its day.

The church has made the world a better place in which to live. We have a long way to go, but we've come a long way.

I don't think so. There have been 54 million abortions since Roe vs. Wade.

We just don't hear the screams or see the mutilated bodies.

Depends on how you look at it.

For example lest say in 2000 there were 10 murders in a certain city. In 2010 there was 12 murders. In one way there is more violence. But suppose the population of that city went from 100,000 to 200,000.

So violence did increase 20% but the murders could also be listed as:

    2000- 10.0 per 100,000
    2010-- 6.0 per 100,000

So in essence, the murder rate declined 40%

Liars never figure, figures never lie

:thumbsup::thumbsup: and that is just in this nation.
One problem today is we are so accustom to violence that we many times do not count certain violent acts as being violence.

I remember critics of the old Roy Rogers & Dale Evans show. They shot up all the bad guys on Saturday morning at the theater and went to church on Sunday morning.

How were we kids able to realize it was only entertainment and not the real thing? Not to mention I always wondered why if Rogers & Evans were husband and wife why did they have different last names?

When Dale Evans married Roy Rogers, she kept her maiden name as her stage name. In her private life she was Dale Evans Rogers.

And, in fact, Roy Rogers was his stage name. Roy's real name was Leonard Slye.

Yes, "numbers" can be treated in ways to promote a particular agenda.

Unemployment rate is going down! (unemployed no longer drawing benefits aren't included)

Inflation is stable! (Food and fuel aren't included in the calculations)

Headline News: Murder rate doubled in xyz small town. (2 killed vs 1 the prior year)

On another note: Before I say that, my heart goes out to those who suffered injuries and loss of life for this senseless act. What I'm about to say, shouldn't in anyway lessen the tragedy they are going through. Comments aren't directed at this particular theater, as some of these thoughts come from local news coverage of local showings of the same film.

-- Why would parents take children to see this type of film? In the "Father Knows Best" age I grew up in, that film wouldn't have been booked in the local movie house. Not because it would have been banned, but because there wouldn't have been enough tickets sold to justify the showing.

Being an oldtimer, I've watched the decline of the standards for all types of media over the years. Yes, there's always been a XXX rated media available from under the counter and the back room. What used to be out of sight, for the most part, has become mainstream entertainment. A sad commentary of our times.

-- Don't the people with the money to attend such movies at midnight on a Thursday night have to go to work the next day? If they don't have to work, do they have enough money for this without asking for some form of public assistance?

-- If people are in debt and are struggling to pay off that debt, why are they spending money on movies? What does it cost to go to a film such as this one? (I haven't been to a movie theater in years.) Plus soda and popcorn?? Transportation costs?? Dinner out before/after the showing??? Bet those aren't beans and rice either.

Speaking of beans and rice, wasn't it unthinkable, just a short time ago, to go to a potluck covered dish meal at church and not bring one yourself? That is if you intend to go through the service line and pile food high on your plate. ?? June Cleaver would have been mortified.

The issue of violence in movies really has nothing to do with crime rates. However, there has been a hugh leap in violence for entertainment purposes. For examples, in the old Westerns, someone was shot, they put their hand over where they were shot and fell over. Now when someone is shot, it is with an automatic and each hole spurts like Old Faithful.

Heads are lobbed off with gushing blood. Every type of way to mutilate the human body we can imagine is depicted in movies. Whether or not it affects the crime rate is immaterial. Why would a Christian enjoy such entertainment? To me, such graphic garbage is no less or more evil than an X rated movie. There is no excuse for it.

    OT,
Thanks for the response. When I was raising my kids, I did not allow those kind of movies. There was one, I do not recall the name, centered around human sacrifice of the ancient Myans. In this one scene, a victim is tied to a stake, and this nut case priest comes up, plunges his fist into the person's chest, and rips out a beating heart.

It amazes me that a parent would allow their child watch this garbage, but if the kid was caught with an X rated movie, the parent would have a heart attack. What a double standard.

It reminds me of a gossip/glutton at church stuffing his face at dinner and telling everyone about the sins of other church members while his mouth is full and his 400 pound carcas is stressing the chair to the max.

You have spoken. Many do not agree with you. If you comparing 2012 to the days of Daniel, or the intertestimal period, then yes you are correct. But compared to the 1960's or the 1930's you are way off. Go and watch some Twilight Zone episodes and in those days adult men could hang out with kids and not be suspect of anything. It was such a safer period of time.

You make some good points Oldtimer. However Dave Ramey would say that some people cannot pay back their debt due to their income to debt ratio. I am in such a boat and need a better income if I ever expect to pay back all my debts. This is common sense 101, and while I can make min payments on my loans, I most definitely can pay more to my smaller credit card debts. And besides there is nothing wrong with having a budget and sticking to it.

    My costs for last night.

Ticket $15 I got it for FREE from a friend
    Eating out costs=$0
Transportation costs=I just drove my car 20 minutes on the interstate and like 5 in the city
Soda/Candy Costs $15-- Yes this is where I was danged and spent more than I should have

Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom. However it was not focusing on the Myans as he was in India and the Myans are in South America. However the Myans, Aztecs and others were big on human sacrifice.
