Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) on Monday announced that Democrats are willing to allow a slew of tax cuts and spending provisions to expire if Republicans refuse to raise taxes on the wealthy, potentially inching the country off a "fiscal cliff."

"If we can't get a good deal, a balanced deal, that calls on the wealthy to pay their fair share, then I will absolutely continue this debate into 2013, rather than lock in a long-term deal this year that throws middle-class families under the bus," Murray, a budget committee member and former co-chair of the debt supercommittee, said at a Brookings Institution discussion of the "fiscal cliff."

"Fiscal cliff" is a reference to the potential crisis faced by the government at the end of this year when the Bush tax cuts and other tax and spending provisions amounting to an estimated $600 billion are set to expire.

Both sides need to do what we are paying them to do, serve us and govern this nation. Stop with the political games, the playing chicken right until the deadline, voting on resolutions that have no chance of passage.

These clowns have not passed a budget in years, only passed continuing resolutions. They take off more days a year than they work. They leave town without doing a thing to solve the mess they created.

The only thing more pathetic than Obama in the US Congress.

The Republican House has passed budgets each year since they took over the House. The Harry Reid democrat Senate sits on its collective thumb and does nothing. And of course that great senior Senator from that great state of My Ole Kentucky Home, McConnell by name, bloviates!

All this because Obama and the democrats haven't produced or agreed to a budget since he's been in office.

The condition of the economy doesn't matter ...as long as they get their tax increases. That's proof they have no business running the country.

It would help if the Republicans negotiated in good faith and did not decide before going into a meeting to oppose everything. The "Oppose All" party is greatly harming this country.

Untrue, and you know it. Dems had a majority for two years. Only a completely dishonest person would say it over & over. You know the truth. It's just that you hate people you view as conservative more than you love the truth.

It is Obama, Harry Reid, and their leftist cohorts who are destroying the country. A President who would leak classified information is guilty of treason. That is Obama!

I agree with your last statement for sure. I hope he will not run again. If he does, it will be without my vote.

This has very little to do with party or political side. This issue brings out the fact that politicians are self indulgent slobs. We the people pay each and every member of Congress to govern, lead, and follow the Constitution. Govern means lead this nation as a Congress, it does not mean play games by taking time to hold mock votes that have no chance of passage, and when one side has done nothing to talk to the other. No workable budgets, not one thought of serving the people, taking off more days than they work. The American people are sick of it.

Nothing will change until we get rid of the Congressional pensions, healthcare, and other perks and make them live by the laws they pass. I don't know how that is done other than calling a Constitutional Convention.

Republicans tried to negotiate over obamacare. The self-proclaimed king looked down his nose at them and reprimanded, "elections have consequences."
