Don't know if this has been touched on yet or not, so I just lay it out.

Are we (church in general) condemning one sin over another when it comes to movies? And I'll throw in books as well.

When Magic Mike and Fifty Shades hit the theaters and bookstores, many of the people I know within the church came out and were very, very vocally against these two. They talked about the moral decay that is taking place within our country and within the church. They almost made it to the point where one would question their salvation if they wanted to see or read either one of these. They talked about purity of the soul, etc.... when talking about these.

Now, before I go to far with this, I have no plan on taking part in either of these two. Just wanted to make sure I threw that out.

But, these same people who were so against these, have no problem with people, including themselves, going and seeing the new Batman, or any of the other movies that hit the screen that portray violence towards others, vulgar language, etc.... Because we are already exposed to these on a daily basis mentality.

What is everyone's opinion on this?

I have a personal guideline I follow in making these decisions.....if Jesus, in the flesh, were sitting next to me, would I still read this book, watch this movie, view this television show, etc. It makes the decision very simple. If I would not then it's not an entertainment I participate in.

    I can't think of a better guideline.

And not only for entertainment or reading materials either. It's a question that I've posed to others who were undecided about xyz.

If you could see Jesus standing (sitting) beside you, what would you do?

Keep the eye on Jesus at all times. Anything else is always less. Why would I want to be entertained according to the world when I have the author and finisher of my faith talking to me and revealing mysteries?

The only thing in movies or on TV that offends me is the excessive use of profanity--especially the use of God, Jesus Christ, the sob phrase, and the "f' word that are all used frequently even on TV. I'm not talking about HBO or other such channels since I don't have those. I'm talking about shows like Law and Order where the SOB phrase is used a lot, and TV movies where the other words and names I mentioned are used way too much.

I haven't been to a theater in decades and have no plans to go again. If there's a new movie I want to see, I'll just wait for them to put it on the TV. Of course, with all the profanity that will be in it, I probably won't watch it anyway. I don't know how many TV movies I've turned off after the first few minutes when someone (usually the main character) used "God" in vain or used "Jesus", "Christ", or both of those withing the first few minutes. That totally ruins the movie for me.

The violence is not real as far as actually killing people, it's all special effects. The profanity is real, and I don't see any reason for sex scenes in movies or on TV.
