Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchisees Sound Off Against SBC "Blind Side" Ban

    Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, who own dozens of restaurant franchises (KFC, Taco Bell, etc.) in the Mid South region, and whose lives were captured in the film The Blind Side, have taken denominational bureaucrats to task for suddenly banning the sale of the movie:

    Real-Life 'Blind Side' Couple Blasts Lifeway

    "Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, the real-life couple who were depicted by Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw in The Blind Side, are defending that movie against LifeWay Christian Stores, which yanked the DVD from its shelves last month citing inappropriate language."

    "In a statement issued to THR, LifeWay says it “decided last month to stop carrying it because of the likelihood it would be the focus of debate and division at our annual denominational meeting. We were electing the Southern Baptist Convention’s first African-American president and did not want to distract from that historic moment.”"

    Leigh Anne Tuohy:

    “What I hate about what LifeWay has done is that it just makes Christians look stupid”

    “They should have put on their big-boy pants and manned up and said, ‘We’re going to stand by this movie just like we have for two years and we’re sorry if it offends you, but we think the good far outweighs the bad’.”

    Sean Tuohy:

    “If LifeWay and the Southern Baptist Convention are the gatekeepers to what is right and wrong in all of our lives, then they’re not doing a very good job, because by the time they made this decision 100 million people had already seen the movie,” he says. “When I first heard of this, I thought it was comical, and certainly not very effective. If I ran my company that poorly, it might take you two years to get a taco at one of my stores.”

    I haven't seen the movie, so I can't comment on the language. Would the language in the film be off-limits here, even if we're having a good discussion about it?

    Or will we have to use asterisks? I'd like to know what the dirty words were.

    Lifeway's statement seems a little lame to me.

    I don't remember bad language and I know we've watched it with my whole family. It was an excellent movie!!

    My husband and I watched the movie on TV just last week. We loved it! If there was inappropriate language, I must have missed it. I'd love to see more movies like this one.

    1. For those who are interested, here is a content list for "The Blind Side" from a secular movie-information website. It is fairly clean as far as current Hollywood movies go, but not completely so.

    2. My perspective may be a bit different, but even though I have seen the movie twice, and think it is a movie a christian can see and make some good cultural observations out of it...it is NOT a Christian movie. The gospel is not present in it...and therein lies the reason I don't think Lifeway stores should be selling it. If they are a bookstore owned and operated by the direction and under the authority of the SBC, which is under the authority of the churches, I would think Lifeway should ONLY carry those items that are expressly Christian in content.

    --By Comparison, there are ZERO curse words in "Monsters INC", and are even some good life lessons about not being predjudiced...but I see no reason why a CHRISTIAN book store should carry such a movie...the same with "the Blind Side". It does not further the message of the Gospel, and could potentially distract from it, so monetary gain is the only motivation for carrying such an item.

    It has the "n" word in it and I can only suppose that - based on what LifeWay said about the discussion of the film being a "distraction" at the "historic moment" of SBC convention whilst they were electing their first black president - that they didn't want to appear as being racist.

    But that's only supposition on my part from reading the article.

    That's all I can get from the article. Yes, there were a few profane words. But if LifeWay has sold it for years before - all I see is hypocrisy in pulling it now IF their decision was to not be seen as racist.

    the Movie has the theme/message of unconditional acceptance/love in it... Must a film have the Gospel mesage directly in it to be a 'good film?"

    While there definitely is no gospel presentation in the film, I can't think of a better one that models the "love thy neighbor as thyself" principle and encourages the "go and do thou likewise" message of the Good Samaritan story.

    Those people did what probably not even 1% of the church community would have done.

    No, but I'm saying We all have the freedom to watch "Good" movies...but a Christian Bookstore should be selling things that are Christian, not just good.

    I don't defend their reasons for pulling off the shelves. I just don't think it should have been there in the first place.

    I don't think it was a racism thing, btw...rather simply a "We don't want to fight about this right now" kind of thing.

    Question for those who think Lifeway should carry this movie: Should they also Carry Toy story, Monster's Inc, hoosiers, etc? Any movie with a good message, or only books, music, & movies that are decidedly Christian?

    Well, I agree and perhaps I misrepresented myself.

    What I did not like was the fact that they sold it for years and suddenly - because the SBC is going to choose the first black president - they had to pull it. That reason is just not making sense to me. Am I missing something?

    If they wanted to, they could have said, "We are doing inventory and are pulling books and films, that while are relatively wholesome, that are not Bible-centered in nature."

    That would have made a lot more sense.

    Bizarre.

    At this year's annual meeting, when a puzzled messenger inquired whether there was any rhyme or reason to Lifeway's decisions about what to sell, the denominational official told him to just "trust the Trustees".

    hahaha... maybe they were naive of unintended consequences... And how in the world would selling the movie be more controversial than pulling it?

    The fundamentalist ethos is growing in the SBC it looks to me.

    I am just glad that I do not watch the garbage coming out today and what many call Christian movies or acceptable for Christians.
