This is a question primarily for the wives here on BB.

If your home was subject to an invasion in the middle of the night with an immediate threat of bodily harm, would you want your husband to actively seek to protect his family? If so, to what extent?

Seemingly stupid questions, I know, but given the other current similarly-themed thread I thought it might be interesting to read what the wives think.

I would expect my husband to do whatever he could to protect his family. Of course, that's assuming the dog and I didn't take care of the intruder first before my dh woke up and figured out what was happening. He's a sound sleeper.

Yes!!! I'd expect us to do whatever necessary to protect our lives, our home, and our property. We live where it could take up to an hour for a sheriff's deputy to answer a 911 call. If someone is invading our home in the middle of the night you can bet it's someone out to do harm. WE work as a team, I'd be right beside him. I wouldn't be the little woman standing behind the door handing him a golf club, sending him to check "the noise."

    Okay, here are my answers:

    A. In a perfect world: He'd do everything in his power and within reason to "save" us, without getting hurt himself.

I love the idea of my husband coming to my rescue in such a case.

    B. In reality: I spent a number of years alone with my girls. It's also in my nature to face danger head-on rather than run away from it, which is the opposite of what I thought I'd do - prior to being in my first fight or flight situation, and what a girl is TOLD to do, but I found out the hard way that it's not how I'm wired. (ask the poor guy with the horribly bloody nose who jumped out from behind a corner at a friend's house 'cause he thought it'd be funny to scare me, ha!)

So in reality, I'd probably be the one trying to protect everyone else in that situation and as much as he'd probably hate me for it, I'd likely throw him behind me before anyone had time to blink and pray him to forgive me later. LOL

    C. Final answer. I've found that DH can be quite protective. Just knowing that makes me feel good and like the weight of it all being on me after so long is lifted. So in the type of situation you gave, I'd hope he'd fight to a reasonable extent for me, ie up until the point where his own life was in immediate danger, then I'd hope he'd stop and save his own life.
If my kids were in danger, I'd hope he'd fight to the death, the same as I would.

I would see no point in either of us dying to save the other, because you couldn't protect them anymore in the future, but I'd hope any human would fight to the death for a child. An adult is better equipped to deal with the aftermath of trauma, while it can ruin children for life.

MY THOUGHTS: I would, if my bedroom was invaded by a man with a gun...
-If he said, give me all your money and jewelery, I would comply and hope he left once he got our valuables.
-If I thought he was planning to hurt us, or kidnap a child or rape my wife, or he tried to injure me to get me out of the way, I would fight him with bare hands or something I found in the house to hit him with...this might possibly be a big custom-made knife I have in our bedroom closet. I would not simply stand there and watch him carry my 2-year old out the door, hoping God would zap him.

I would not be necessarily trying to kill him, but hit him enough that he ran away or was no longer a danger to us.

I would not shoot him because...

MY WIFE'S EXPRESSED DESIRE: My wife has asked, since we were married, that I not have a gun in the house...so I don't own one. This was not a strain for me because I didn't own one before we were married either. I believe that she wants me to be a protector, but has more concerns about accidental shootings. We live in a pretty un-eventful neighborhood, so this policy might be up for discussion if we ever moved into a gang-ridden area...She might want me to get a gun.

12-strings, have stuff within immediate reach, and more than one since you may panic and forget where one or two things are, and certainly may not have time to reach a closet. Eke!

    A story:
A gentle Quaker was awakened during the night by a noise downstairs. He quietly got up and took his shotgun from its rack.

He tiptoed down the stairs to see someone in his dining room, putting all the silverware into a bag. He watched him for a minute, and finally spoke:

"Friend, I would not harm thee for all the world, but thou standest where I'm about to shoot."

I second this...we keep a baseball bat next to the bed at all times.....even though we DO have guns. However, we keep them unloaded, because there are children who visit us and we wouldn't want any accidental shootings. We keep the ammo nearby (the clips are filled and ready to grab but not near the guns), but in an instant moment that bat is a handy weapon to have. By the time you'd get to the closet, find the knife, and follow the intruder the damage would be already done. If nothing else get yourself a big Maglite flashlight and keep it near the bed. Why you may ask...because they can do MEGA damage....just ask my left foot! LOL I knocked hubby's out of his nightstand while making the bed on the top of my foot....fractured two bones.

There is a deep dark place in hell for the man who is not willing to do everything possible to protect his family.
