Some people have an agenda and that is to attack the NIV. I have many documents that bring a strong defense of the NIV. However the latest and perhaps most scholarly is a most excellent book called Has God spoken by Hank Hanegraaf. Although we disagree in matters of Bible prophecy, and the age of the earth, other than those issues Hanegraaf is a great apologist and wrote a good book here. I notice that the NIV is the default translation, and hearing Hanegraaf defend it on the air to callers, I have to wonder if any NIV hater or critic can rebuff this great book? If so please speak, or forever hold your peace.

Thanks for the link. It gave me the opportunity to read the reviews on this book. When looking at reviews at Amazon, it's always good to read the glowing praises, and then look at the rest of them.

    In my opinion.............

I always take glowing praise with a grain of salt, as I do with those who bash books for some reason. In this case because the 3 star rating garnered more votes than 5, I started with 3 and read 3, 2 & 1 reviews. Well written, these reviews bring in some serious points to consider about this book.

Now, for your question. Why bring up the NIV controversy using this book as the basis? Why use the term NIV haters? I do not like the NIV for a number of reasons. However, I do not HATE any Bible that contains the word of God. People can come to Christ any time they read/hear His word. A billboard, a business card, a tract, a hymn, etc. & etc.

Which "great book" are you referring to with your question? The NIV or God Has Spoken. If the latter, those reviews I mentioned is a good place to start. If the NIV, here's a place to start. http://brandplucked.webs.com/articles.htm Take any article of your choice, relating to the NIV and refute it.

The King James Only Controversy by James White is a good one that refutes KJV Onlyism, and uses the NIV much (at least in the first edition).

think that there are persons like me who think the 1984 edition was better, as new one went overboard in the gender translation issues, but would still say a good version to use, just prefer the nasb!

Once again. Why did you bring up the KJB only controversy when discussing Has God Spoken? While I haven't read the book, I have read the reviews. So far, I've seen nothing to indicate that his book is about Bible versions. His book is about proving that God's word is true. (If I'm incorrect, please let me know.)

Yes very true, but Hanagraaf knows the NIV in and out and having one whom has studied the evidences for the creation of the Word of God, he walks away with confidence and uses the NIV as his default text.

i agree. i prefer the ESV, NASB, and NKJV to the NIV, but I have nothing against the NIV. i do, however, prefer the NIV84, overall.

We need to be aware of the different degrees of translation issues here.

For example, what is the critic issue regarding a particular translation.

    Agreed!

just think for the purpose of the OP, my stance would still be valid though, as the NIV is a good english translation, just prefer to use for studies those translations that based upon more of a formal equivalance model...

the NIV is the ONLY "dynamic" Bible version i use (with the exception of the NLT, on occasion).

The NIV is not a dynamic equivalent translation. It is much closer to the NASBU/ESV in translational method than the NLTse.

i suppose that all depends on who you talk to (or who you choose to believe).

those who like the NIV say it isn't dynamic. those who dislike the NIV say it is.

The no-nothings such as Grudem,Dobson,Ryken &Co. say it's dynamic. New Testament scholars say it is a mediating version with a slight tilt toward the formal equivalent end of things.

Would say that it occupies same spot on the translation tree as the HCSB, with it being a tad more dynamic than that version!

There are a number of translations occupying a very small amount of real estate as far as what can be called mediating ground : HCSV,ISV,NIV,NAB,Wright's N.T.,NET and the Common English Bible.

The old Modern Language Bible, Norlie,Weymouth's version and the 20th Century New Testament would probably fit in the category too.
