I heard this a few years ago but hadn't researched it much. http://ahealthyidea.com/studies-show-microwaves-drastically-reduce-nutrients-food/

It makes sense considering the taste and texture are definitely not the same as raw or cooked in a regular oven. And a good thing about avoiding the microwave is that maybe we'll have more good, ole fashioned family meals.

I guess it should have been obvious that using radiation to heat our food probably isn't the best idea - at least not for the majority of our meals.

I generally only use it for water or to reheat stuff. I wonder if it causes as much loss if you're reheating and not fully cooking it, since the time in is a lot less.

    Hrm.

The only thing I really cook is potatoes to soften them up if I'm making fried potatoes or something that I'm going to stir-fry potatoes into.

What is the point of the OP. Regular cooking reduced nutrients in many foods also. Should we eat everything raw?

Well put, any processing, heating or handling reduces the nutrient content of food.

This one appears to be one of those "Doh!" moments.

Yes! We should eat as much raw stuff as possible. Seriously. It's supposed to be very healthy, so long as you take care to wash it carefully. A lot of people do not realize that watermelons and other fruits and vegetables that get cut should be thoroughly washed before one slices into them.

I had a pastor once that developed cancer. I became a believer in raw foods when they told him nothing would help. He went on a raw food diet and his doctor expressed much surprise when the tumors began to shrink on their own. It's been so long that I do not recall the type of cancer or even the name of the pastor, but that was a turning point for me. I started really thinking about what food we consume and how we alter them.

It seems that as close to the way they were created is usually the best way to consume them! You have to admit that it's very nice to stand in a garden you grew yourself and be able to stand there and pick stuff and eat it while knowing there's no possible way to get it any more fresh than that!

When the boys were babies my wife used to claim that microwaving pumped breast milk would destroy it's nutrients and vitamins. As I sit there watching the breast milk being heated up in a covered bottle I could only wonder, 'Really? So where do the vitamins go?"

When you say 'radiation' in actuality it is radio waves. BTW, radio waves? You're soaking in them right now.

The frequency of the radio waves used to cook food is the exact frequency that makes water molecules resonate. The radio waves make the water molecules into a kind of tuning fork. When the water molecules vibrate they heat up. This in turn heats the food. There is no radioactivity, or radiation as we normally think of it.

Sooo… there is an unnatural highly concentrated force from a source (radio waves) which are flying around and act upon and change molecules of water (BTW, in which our bodies are mostly made of – don’t stand to close people!). (This reminds me of the great offense my mother-in-law once took when I politely asked her not to sit my daughter right in front of the microwave when heating her formula…she apparently thought I was being ridiculous, after-all who would be suspicious that these unnatural waves could go beyond the glass…anyway…) These changes in molecules are incredibly fast and very evident in such things as texture (rubberized hot leftover pizza in 2 minutes, for example) and some don’t think the structural changes could have any? affect on the nutrients through the introduction of these (unnatural) added in elements to the composition of foods which we are putting in our bodies??? Okaaaay!

Heating foods removes many of the nutrients; I can only imagine what the added effects of messing with molecules could have. Simply, it has been proven that raw is much better for us, heating is overused and often not beneficial and microwaving opens the door to being much worse yet. Unfortunately, our society is all about convenience, the quick fix, fast foods, take a pill rather than deal with the cause, it’s easier that way, and the considerations of what we put in our bodies are put on the back burner as the trend in our society is to prioritize the quick and easy conveniences rather than give our bodies the best.

Seems like some people treat their body as if they are renting it... ;) :type:

Some people have a foolish way of not minding, or pretending not to mind, what they eat. For my part, I mind my belly very studiously, and very carefully; for I look upon it, that he who does not mind his belly will hardly mind anything else. ~Samuel Johnson

The body too has its rights; and it will have them: they cannot be trampled on without peril. The body ought to be the soul's best friend. Many good men however have neglected to make it such: so it has become a fiend and has plagued them. ~Augustus William Hare and Julius Charles Hare, Guesses at Truth, by Two Brothers, 1827

If the mind, that rules the body, ever so far forgets itself as to trample on its slave, the slave is never generous enough to forgive the injury, but will rise and smite the oppressor. ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Benjamin, your arguments are usually much more thoughtful than this. You are engaging in innuendo and leading questions.

There are magnetic locks on microwave ovens. Radio waves cannot escape.

In the example I used, heating pumped breast milk in a microwave in an enclosed bottle, exactly where are the nutrients going to go?

Great, now I'm less nutritious! I can now go hiking and bears will leave me alone because I'm just empty calories, right?

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.
