A church I used to attend is canceling worship services this morning to go out into the community and do good deeds. What do you think of this?

    From the Mpls. StarTribune:

Sherri Kadlec won't be attending Hillside Church of Bloomington on Sunday, but she'll still be at church. She'll just be picking up litter strewn around school yards and parks as a form of service.

Kadlec's church and four other congregations in Bloomington are canceling regular worship services to do charitable works in an effort to show they're living out the do-good messages they preach.

Nearly 1,000 people from Bethany, Emmaus, Evergreen, Garden Community and Hillside evangelical churches plan to help their neighbors by painting houses, picking up trash, cleaning school playgrounds and public parks, offering free vehicle oil changes to single parents and hosting a basketball clinic.

I think it is wrong to cancel worship services to do good deeds. I agree with this comment (from the article):

"I want more churches to serve and to do it together, but there are 167 hours a week where that can be done. So I am hesitant to cancel worshipping Jesus so we might serve in his name. I think we can do both."

I don't have a problem with canceling service to help minister to others. No place in the Bible says we have to be in a church building, listening to a sermon and singing hymns 3 times a week in order to be spiritually correct. There are many widows, single moms, etc. in our churches who need help. I would like to see more churches meet at their homes and help cut their grass, fix their roof, change the oil in the cars, etc. Personally, I'd like to be in church on Sunday and use the Wednesday night service time to do something like this. Too many churches are full of people who never do anything together outside the 4 walls of the church building.

That said, I think it's different to cancel church to pick up trash in a park. That's different from helping your members.

A friend of mine pastors a church in Iowa. His church did this today. I thot it was a great idea. There are opportunities to witness to people and it gets people out to where needs can be met in Jesus' name.

I like it! It seems that they are worshipping Jesus by serving people.

Bible says they "came together on the first day of the week."

I sure hope they are witnessing. I don't consider hosting a basketball clinic to be meeting people's needs. Also, cleaning up public parks and public school playgrounds is simply duplication of efforts as taxpayer money already goes for this.

Hey, if it's such a great thing, why not do it every Sunday morning?

I used to attend Hillside Church (was then called Bloomington Baptist church) and the first thing the new pastor did was cancel Sunday night worship services. Then, despite vowing never to drop 'Baptist' from their name in a job interview meeting, he changed the name of the church. Then a couple of Sundays each summer they would have outdoor services with other churches in the area. Now they cancel Sunday morning service. I sense a pattern here....

If the need was pressing, like after a natural disaster, then I would say ok. Otherwise, I think the pastor should be in the pulpit on Sunday, ready to feed the sheep and preach the gospel.

You misquote scripture very well, maybe you can make a career out of it.

So let me quote one for you in Matthew 5:16 - Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

As one poster has said, if this were because of a natural disaster or an immediate and pressing community need of food, clothing, or shelter because of a community-wide tragic event, I would not oppose it.

But a basketball clinic? Picking up trash? And those two events called for the cancelling of church services?

    Something's amiss here.

Why couldn't they have held a public service in the park or nearby community center that morning and invited the same people that they were "ministering" to and THEN held the basketball clinic and pick up trash day.

Deut. 31:12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn to fear the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law.

And while we're at it, we can offer the sacrifices of the OT also. And we'll move to Friday night and Saturday. How much else of the OT do you want for the church to accomplish?

But this is getting silly. You posted what you think. I've posted what I think. Enjoy!

If I were a member of that church I might or might not get upset about it- I'm not, so God bless 'em and let's get on with our own ministries.

This is not a criticism but an agreement. I would just title it Canceling in house service to worship our Lord through service in the community. Service in His name is worship.

Our SBC church has cancelled the Sunday morning service next Sunday for people to serve others instead of coming to church. They call it the BigServe and have done it the past two or three years. They have a service on that Sunday night where people can report what they did to serve others.

How about this? Have Sunday morning service- then go out and do community service?

    I think it's great.

The church my wife and I attend has two campuses. A couple of weeks ago, the "satellite" campus canceled their Saturday evening service and their Sunday morning service and spent the two days working at a local elementary school getting everything clean and ready for when it opened.

They did it over the weekend so they could have as many members as possible helping out.

This quote is troublesome to me, though it reflects the skewed idea that worship is what happens in Church when we're singing or something. That is only the smallest aspect of worship and isn't as important as it's made out to be.

I dont see anything wrong with it, besides I can't think of any greater way to worship than serving in His name. :jesus:

Amen! People have a hard enough time going to church as it is! If Sunday morning is the only time to clean a park or have a basketball clinic, then there are some big problems!

However, today we went to a first "annual" fair for a community right near our church campus and there was a church on that block. There was no way to get to the church except to park a distance away and walk. Hubby and I spoke about it and we would have had an earlier service then open the church to the street and offer free food, a changing station for babies and live music.

I definitely feel that we need to do good deeds but must we forget worship of the Lord to do so? I would only "cancel" services in a natural disaster where there was a great need on Sunday morning or else to relocate to maybe a shelter or nursing home to bring the worship service to others.
