    I tend to try and look at both sides of issues and not be too reactionary. I know this has Fox as a source so am a little leery, but still, really, come on. The State Department is telling us that 'Hold down the fort' is racially offensive?

    The problem is that the author if this "diversity" piece didn't tell us what we're allowed to say....

    'Rule of thumb' could be offensive to women.

    But I'll betcha G__D__ is acceptable speech.

    And we know that 'back in chains' is acceptable speech.

    I would say that 99.9+% of the people who use some of these "sayings" have no idea where they originated.

    Your link to the FOX story has a link to the actual article contained in State Magazine a publication of the U.S. State Department.

    The article is on page 8. So, yes the State Department is telling their employees (not necessarily us) they shouldn't use these words/phrases. Diplomacy is all about being tactful so I don't have a problem with it, although it is a bit over the top.

    My [adult] son had the same response. I guess I understand it, but I fear that creating an over-sensitivity causes at least as many problems. In trying to test out every phrase we use we end up destroying our ability to communicate.

    We are allowing a culture that is far to sensitive. Diplomacy is grand, but no matter how hard we try we not going to be able to stop every possible offensive phrase. A sensible balance is required.

    Hey, even my name is a vulgarity in some English circles.

    Anyhow - to me it truly shows just how silly things become in an attempt to be politically correct.

    I have a problem with it. It is over-reactive, unnecessary, and feeds people who are only looking for problems. It causes people to have to walk around on egg shells all the time. those people looking to be offended by this stuff should get over it or move on.

    You seem to have a balanced approach to politics and government that keeps me in check at times, since I tend to dismiss what Democrats say. I do think there is no excuse for such language in any forum, PC or otherwise, regardless of where someone works. There is no excuse for taking the Lord's name in vane. Also, references, direct or between the lines, towards race, gender, or national origin have no place in our national debate.
