Help me out here folks. When is a remark considered a personal attack?

I see the word liar and lying thrown about on this forum with abandon! I am fairly certain I have done the same as well as calling some Marxists which is far worse. Is saying that one is "bearing false witness" more of a personal attack than calling one a liar or a Marxist?

Or is it all in the eye of the beholder?

Depends on how thick your skin is, but there is definitely a line.

    For me:
    1. "Liar" without evidence.
    2. "Son of Satan", or something similar.
    3. Any kind of attack directed toward Mrs. Arbo.
    4. Attacks on personal character or reputation. (pts. 1,2)
Other than that, I really don't care.

Ed. to add: I think I may have misunderstood the context of the OP to mean personal attacks on fellow BB posters.

You read correctly. I am just trying to understand why "bearing false witness" is more a PA than "liar".

You might try having a conversation with a mod. they do not have a habit of answering those questions but you could give it a try.

I can take any comment about me, but when they include my wife, kids, or parents, we are going to war.

I do not recall seeing any mean or unwarranted attacks from you. There are a couple or so lurking around here that do constantly, and that is fine as long as one leaves my family alone.

S/N I may smite you with the jawbone of a "burro" on occasion, and may I say a well deserved thrashing, but I would never say anything about your beloved family, or for that matter anyone's family.

I highly respect you and Lady Eagle from turning my anger towards Romney and making him someone I can vote for. Also, my experience at the national convention of the Constitution Party convinced me.

    In relation to the BB:

Accusing another member of lying or bearing false witness, or accusing another member of not being a Christian are considered personal attacks.

Following the same line of thought, here is a thread on libel and slander posted on the news forum by the Squire.

I think everyone should be very careful about calling direct names. You might end up in a local court. It does not take much to get a local charge of harrassing communications, even when trying to get back pay from a former employer. Sometimes all it takes is the number of contacts, even if there is no threatining language, or some type of obscene gesture.

    Times are definitely changing, SN.

Just today (I think) obama's government has released politically incorrect terms people are not supposed to use.

    Hold down the fort.

    As a rule of thumb.

    Etc.

    I read Squire's good post.

One thing to remember. If it's the truth, it's not libel or slander, however you say it.

There are some expressions which say the same thing, but tend to have less sting to them.

For instance, instead of saying "that's a lie," saying, I don't think that's quite right" communicates the idea without the vitriol.

It is always right to be able to disagree without being disagreeable.

A soft answer, even in debate, turns away wrath.
