I feel so blessed to be born in and to live in Florida. Florida is superior to all the other states, especially Texas. We have everything- wonderful beaches and inland areas, large cities like Jacksonville and wide open countryside, palm trees swaying gently in the breeze and forests full of pine trees. Earlier today as I was sitting on my back porch sipping sweet tea and looking at little tweety birds landing in our grapefruit tree illuminated by the beautiful sunshine of a cloudless blue sky, I realized how jealous people in other states must feel. People up north in Georgia and Alabama must feel the most jealous, being so close to Florida, but not quite there. This place truly is God's country.

I'm reminded of a joke often heard in North Florida:

    Q. Why does the St. Johns River flow North?
    A. Because Georgia sucks!

Why yes, and they are such informed and organized voters. Here a chad, there a chad, everywhere a chad, chad............

I must say, I am in debt to Florida. I bought stock in Metimucil and Depends, and that state keeps the stock prices and dividends high.

All kidding aside, it is a beautiful state. We have been most places along the beach and the theme parks while the kids grew up. Two things I have not seen are the Keys, and a place I am really looking forward to seeing, is St. Augustine. Have you been there?

I was born in N. Carolina, but moved to Florida when I was ten. I first lived in Ft. Walton Beach. I especially remember the fishing there. Then we moved to Panama City where I received Jesus. So, Panama City will always hold a special place in my heart. After that we moved to Jacksonville for a year (Post St.) and then out to Jacksonville Beach. I lived in Jax. Bch. until my twenties and met my wife, when I moved to Connecticut (her home). We moved back to Florida from '80 to '89, so altogether I lived in Florida about 22 years. A good chunk of my life, and some of the best years of my life. There was always so much to do, we used to surf almost every day, go fishing and boating in the Intracoastal Waterway. We used to camp on the Suwanee River every year to hunt, it was great. I went to Duncan U. Fletcher High School.

I miss the ocean the most, wish I could still surf. Besides that I miss the huge sky and watching the lightning at night. It was a great place to grow up and I still keep in touch with many friends in Florida on Facebook.

My father lived in Orange Park until he passed away in '09, so I may never return to Florida, but I will always love it, and I still think of it as home.

Edit- Oh yeah, I knew that joke about Georgia! Those Bulldog fans are crazy!

I know this question wasn't for me, but I have been to St. Augustine probably hundreds of times. There is a very special surf spot there called Blowhole, because when you get a swell out of the southeast you get waves just like the Pipeline in Hawaii. We camped out there once in the sand dunes and had about six of our surfboards stolen. Man, I was furious, especially because there were great waves that day.

St. Augustine is a nice town with lots of attractions like the fort, Ripley's, and a nice wax museum (can't remember the name). There is a section with very tiny streets with many shops, you would love that.

And alligators, Burmese pythons, sink holes and if everyone flushed their toilet at the same time the entire state would be under water!

Personally, I am glad you all think florida is so bad, because that means you don't come down here.

I'll gladly take the alligators instead of a state tax. I'll gladly take hurricanes instead of the below freezing weather during the winter. I'll glad take the jokes about the hanging chad for the privilege of having a state that went for George Bush instead of the inventor of the internet.

I'll gladly take the weirdness of Key West and the spanish language in Miami instead of the tornadoes of the midwest the crowd of the northeast and the left wing politics of the west coast.

we have 2 sayings down here:
    If This is Tourist Season
    Why Can't We Shoot Them

    Welcome to Florida
    Now Go Home

    Dirt! and more Dirt!

Been to Albuquerque a few times; could see a long way, still dirt.

Drove up Sandis Mountain in a rental car. A flatlander from Florida got scared and had to turn around. Good thing as the brakes began to fade just as we hit bottom. If we had made it to the top we would have had a glorious view of, you guessed it Dirt!

Not as bad as Nevada though. Nevada, particularly the Nevada test site, makes the Albuquerque region look downright lush.

The new Florida economy was designed for tourists and retired people. Low paying jobs and city traffic of mostly old people and tourists.

Never been to Florida. But I have been to the Carolinas, and Atlanta. Way too humid, I would never be comfortable.

Right now is fire season, it will last until Late this month, the valley fills with smoke. In the winter it will get down to 25 below zero, and our summer lasts only 6 weeks. Grizzly bears, big cats, and rattlesnakes prowl our woods. The wind coming out of Hellgate Canyon can flip small cars over.

    But it's not humid.

I know. Parts of Arizona and New Mexico are wooded. As a young man I thought I would live out west but God had other plans! I also understand that the terrain around Reno is beautiful but Las Vegas and the Nevada Test Site, that is nothing but dirt!

You want humid, try Houston or New Orleans! Never been to Montana but have been in the Seattle area and the TriCities area. Seattle humid, TriCities dry! In Seattle once when it snowed. Folks acted about like those in SC; on the road that is!

Gators ? LOL. I read they can stand on their tippy toes and reach almost a foot tall. They look like overgrown geckos with their stubby little Tom Cruise legs.

I came up on a black bear, looked to be about 225 pounds, when I was fishing. Thank God he made them dumb, because if this bear had a brain, he would have known he could rip me apart like a peanut butter sandwich. Instead, he ran away at a pretty high rate of speed. I was quite impressed with the ease and speed which he took off.

Grizzly bears go about 650 pounds. We have real predators, out here.

Yep, I did a funeral for a guy who swam with the overgrown geckos. Every area has predators that can do a person in.
