    Dear Friend,

With all that is going in Washington these days some things don’t make the news the way they should. Fourteen days ago President Obama issued an Executive Order that you should know about. This order gives an unprecedented level of authority to the President and the federal government to take over all the fundamental parts of our economy - in the name of national security - in times of national emergency.

This means all of our water resources, construction services and materials (steel, concrete, etc.), our civil transportation system, food and health resources, our energy supplies including oil and natural gas – even farm equipment – can be taken over by the President and his cabinet secretaries. The Government can also draft U.S. citizens into the military and force U.S. citizens to fulfill "labor requirements" for the purposes of "national defense." There is not even any Congressional oversight, only briefings are required.

By issuing this as an Executive Order the President puts the federal government above the law, which, in a democracy, is never supposed to happen.

As President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, he has the Constitutional authority to issue executive orders. And while similar orders have been made before by presidents from Eisenhower and Reagan to Clinton and George Bush – it has never been done to this extent.

It is still unclear why this order was signed now, and what the consequences are for our nation – especially during times of peace. This type of Martial Law imposes a government takeover on U.S. citizens that is typically reserved for national emergencies, not in a time of relative peace.

I want you to know I am following this very closely.

In July, he signed an E.O. that granted Homeland Security the authority to take over all communications. Back in March, he signed one that further expanded previous presidents' (including Clinton) EOs, allowing the government to take private property or even private businesses in time of national emergency.

There have been an awful lot of EOs, especially by this president, that give the appearance of preparing for something.

    ----- edited to add:
My bad. I just realized the OP link was to the EO from March. It would be interesting, at least to me, to look at the list of EOs signed during this administration that are related to the March and July ones.

And who but a Republican president and Republican congress created the Homeland Security agency and opened the door for this?

    Every president has issued EO's.

As of August 31st, Obama has issued 137 EO's, averaging 34.2 a year.

Bush in 8 years issued 291 EO's or an average of 36.27 a year. So on average Bush issued more EO's than Obama.

The question is: who determines a national emergency?

This is misleading at best. The President's authority to issue an executive order is limited to only those duties assigned to the President by the Constitution. The President is not Commander in Chief of the united states of America.

Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation only had the force of law in time of war. Real war.

And thus, the part where I said "further expanded previous presidents". Emphasized Clinton to show it went back before Bush (Patriot Act is considered the beginning, but it started before then).

Pay attention: I said "related to these." It doesn't matter how many each issued.

This is the stuff that 'scares' me, not passing out invitations to the acceptance speech or what Michelle says about shopping.

President Obama is taking the precedent of powerful EOs to unheard of levels. The worst part is that there is no going back. The entire structure of the US system is changing from constitutional to executive control. It will only get worse no matter who is elected.

Though he is in a sense simply following precedent he is taking these measures to a whole new level.

And yet here we argue about sand sculptures and shopping lists.

Good thread. Thanks to the author.

Qbamma forgets that America clings to its guns. Trying to enforce such an order would end in revolution.

I believe that the founders inserted the 2nd Amendment to prevent the establishment of that which Obama envisions for this country. See thread: Interview: "Obama Had Marxist Vision For US At Occidental College"
