The killings of the US ambassador to Libya and three of his staff were likely to have been the result of a serious and continuing security breach, The Independent can reveal.

American officials believe the attack was planned, but Chris Stevens had been back in the country only a short while and the details of his visit to Benghazi, where he and his staff died, were meant to be confidential.

The US administration is now facing a crisis in Libya. Sensitive documents have gone missing from the consulate in Benghazi and the supposedly secret location of the "safe house" in the city, where the staff had retreated, came under sustained mortar attack. Other such refuges across the country are no longer deemed "safe".

Some of the missing papers from the consulate are said to list names of Libyans who are working with Americans, putting them potentially at risk from extremist groups, while some of the other documents are said to relate to oil contracts.

According to senior diplomatic sources, the US State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and "lockdown", under which movement is severely restricted.

So what has changed? Many say the same about Pearl Harbor and 9/11.

Can you say "Failed Obama foreign policy" ?

Seems bowing and apologizing to radicals is "coming home to roost" as Rev Wright would say.

I'm not defending or decrying the present administration on this...a little caveat upon. :)

I wonder how many of us know how many reports of potential threats the intelligence community gets in a given day or week. I can't imagine it's not a few. Starting the week did any of us think that some random YouTube video that had been hosted on their site for months would blow things up like it did? (I'm still convinced 90% of the "protestors" have never seen it or heard of YouTube.)

It's a challenging world right now. Radical Islam is highly destructive and is spinning a huge swath of our planet out of control.

That said...my biggest issue still remains why aren't these embassies and consulates able to defend themselves against attacks. They are sovereign American soil. One perpetrator sets foot inside the courtyard they get dropped. Why isn't this happening?

Doesn't make for good headlines or stir the American people's anger enough to make us demand attacking yet another nation that was never a threat to us.

Ya gotta have a pretext before ya start bombing another country to smithereens doncha know?

Obama thinks the attacks on America are justified. Of course he will do nothing.

As I recall, we did nothing about the USS Pueblo, the Iranian hostages, the 183 Marines killed in Lebanon, etc.............

Except aid the enemy by sending them $$ for submarines which they will eventually use against us.

I wonder why we have consulates at all. In this modern day, they serve no purpose.

Actually they do- as 'safe havens' for missionaries and others at times such as these.

Except that these "safe havens" are not proving to be very safe.
