Let's take a look at Mitt Romney's schedule and we might find clues as to why his campaign hasn't caught fire as yet.

Thursday Sep. 13 Hosting event at Long Island Airport. BLUE STATE

Friday Sep 14. (morning) Hosting fundraiser in New York City. BLUE STATE
Friday (afternoon) Hosting event at Erie College, Ohio. TOSS UP STATE

Saturday Sep 15 Took day off at home in Mass. [!!]

Sunday Sep 16 (evening) Hosted rally at Pueblo Colorado. LEANS BLUE STATE

Monday Sep 17 (morning) Speech to Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Los Angeles CA. BLUE STATE

Tuesday Sep 18 (morning) Hosting an event in Salt Lake City, UT. RED STATE

Wed Sep 19 No events scheduled [!!]

Thurs Sep 20 (evening) private fundraiser in Florida TOSS UP STATE

What's the matter with this picture? Couple of things:

    1. In a span of 8 days, Romney has only 7 campaign events scheduled. Where is the tireless worker from Bain Capital that worked 18 hours a day? Where is the guy that ran the Olympics 18 hours a day? You go from Friday afternoon until Sunday night between campaign events? A complete weekend wasted. You go from Tuesday morning until Thursday night between appearances?

    2. Of those 7 campaign events only 2 are in toss up states. Of those 7 events, two are fundraisers. Do you really need to hold fundraisers at this point in the campaign?

    3. Where are the surrogates? Where is McCain, Gingrich, Santorum?

Is there a correlation between campaign stops and more voters, or has it been proven this strategy helps? He is going strong on social media and airtime, and IMO that is the modern way to connect with people. Work smarter, not harder.

I'm sure you know the difference between advertising and public relations. Public relations gives the facade of legitimacy to your message by the press. In contrast, everyone knows an advertisement when they see it.

Personal appearances in toss up states compel the press to give airtime to the candidate. It is newsworthy. They have to cover it.

Once you get the free news coverage time on local TV stations covering your campaign event, THEN you run the ads during the newscast to reinforce your message and subliminally create the impression that the TV station is behind your candidate.

Many times they are interchangeable. Obama was elected the first time not due to appearances, but getting his message out there, which was nothing more than an advertisement with catchy phrases of "hope" and "change".

Not in my neck of the woods. They will merely say so-and-so visited blah-blah-blah and show a one sentence snippet.
Social media is also free and reaches more people, something I think he is focusing on.

It seems to me if one was scheduling a campaign appearance, one would not waste money on states (due to the electoral college) that are swing states like Virginia, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Iowa, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Nevada and Colorado. Romney spending time in California makes no sense. That would be like Obama coming to our state.

If we ever changed to popular vote, the campaign trail geography would change radically. My guess is that it would be centered around major cities, regardless of state. Most disagree with me, but I like the electoral college.

In between, he is debate prepping, I suppose.

He had better start coming out strong, IMO, if he expects to win.

I sure hope so. I would think the time he's on an airplane would be a good time for this sort of thing.

Totally agree. When I think of the lackluster campaign that McCain ran, and going back to Dole as well, it angers me. Bush W ran good campaigns.

I think Romney needs to adopt new terms. Rather than saying tax cuts and closing tax loopholes he should simply say 'tax reform.' I know it's only semantics but it makes a difference.

    This is more like it...

Romney Out-Hustling Obama on the Campaign Trail

Gov. Mitt Romney is spending far more time campaigning than President Obama, staging 16 campaign rallies and speeches compared to only 9 by Obama so far this month, according to a White House Dossier analysis of their schedules.

Obama had held only six events through October 16. With his recent decline in the polls, the president is suddenly making up for lost time, holding three events in the last two days. He is appearing at another today in Fairfax, Virginia. Romney holds a rally this evening with running mate Paul Ryan.

Obama has been off the campaign trail a total of about a week this month preparing for the first two debates, with mixed results. He flopped in the first debate after three days of study.

The figures are for traditional campaigning and do not include fundraisers done by the candidates.
