My mother was a faithful viewer of the 700 Club back in the 60's and 70's. At that time, my parents could barely make ends meet, living on their fixed income, along with providing a home for my disabled sibling. Yet, she faithfully mailed her $5/$10 check, every week to the 700 Club.

My parents ate rice and beans while he ate steak.

Not sure that is true. In the 1980's, I knew members of his senior staff while the 700 club was growing because they went to my church. In the 1970's, Pat Robertson lived in a small house in not too nice a neighborhood in Portsmouth, Va. He was reluctant to move into the new large house built at the 700 club headquarters. They were always joking about it.

Also they always joked about the old care he drove when they were driving new cars.

Granted, this information is about 30 years old.

Whether I agree or disagree with the outcome of any situation, IMO, it is far better to know as much of the whole story, as we can. Even if it's from 30 years ago. Or, from 2000 years ago.

If nothing else, this should be a perfect example of why the Fundamentalist practice of second & third level separation cannot be practiced without effectively shunning EVERYONE! If I can't associate with Wayne Grudem because he learned from the same man who taught Benny Hinn, and I can't associate with anyone who quotes Wayne Grudem because of that...and I can't associate with anyone who quotes from, or approves of any of those people who like Wayne Grudem...then you can see where this is headed!

 

I don't have a lot of respect for Pat and think his ministry is a harbinger of last century which, for the betterment of Christendom in general, should be shut down.

Pat's been in some very dubious business and political deals for a long time. It is true that at the height of PTL and the Moral Majority he might have been an effective VP candidate. However, it seems that he is largely unattached to the contemporary society he attempts to critique. His latest ramblings and ministerial insights have caused disrespect to the Church and Christ.

Make no doubt about it, Pat is very, very wealthy. I don't have a problem with this and support a person's efforts to become wealthy so long as it is moral, ethical, and keeps them grounded in their faith. I'm not going to get into a big long discussion about all of Pat's business and political interests but I think they, as a cross-section, represent a dubious agenda that lacks Christian virtue and ethics.

For starters he used to have a half-stake in a gold and diamond mine with a pretty well known dictator named Charles Taylor. The abuses at that mine should make any of us shudder. There are many other instances of questionable financial dealings with less than reputable civic and business leaders.

Of course there are some things he has no control over. Like when he sold off the Family Channel which eventually became ABF Family and produces shows that (marketed to teenagers) are horrific, immoral displays of Hollywood's utter corruption of our youth. Pat had no control over that as it happened 15 years after his sale.

He is very wealthy and could reasonably support all of his ministries based on his wealth alone. I refuse to give money to any one on television or radio as a general rule. Pat is one of the reasons I made that rule for myself.

Of course the bigger problem with Pat isn't his financial bona fides, it is his use of a "prophetic gift" to push out his agenda that is really appauling. He claims God tells him stuff and is almost always wrong. (Cf. Bush landslide in 2004) Outside of this his theology is suspect and it seems his political ambitions and scheming drive much of his "ministry."

I am, obviously, not a fan of him. There are onlly a few ministries and ministers I would openly oppose. Generally I choose not to make a big deal about someone's ministry. Pat is a lingering example of an extended episode of Christian influence that has, ultimately, produced a vibrant counter-Christian feeling in the mainstream of our culture.

 

I have watched Pat Roberston over the years from time to time. He is kind of a mixed bag. He certainly has a better ministry than Robert Tilton, Ernest Angsley (come out evil spirit), and Jimmy Swaggart. He seems more down to earth the the PTL Club, especially past hosts.

The only thing that really bothered me about Pat's ministry was a word from the Lord over the TV set, and taking credit for redirecting hurricanes. However, some of his news items showed great insight to a situation. Does anyone remember when he ran for President in 1988? Wonder what that administration would have been like.
