Well, in case you haven't heard, Donald Trump spoke in the chapel service at Liberty University today.

They even gave him an honorary doctorate.

If you want to watch...well go google it, it's up on YouTube.

The school is growing like crazy. It has a lot of students both on campus and on line. However, it is quickly departing the ways and ideals of its founder. I am very concerned for the immediate future at Liberty. As an alum who has a heart to see a great biblically based Christian institution rise up on that mountain, I am reticent about the moves of its leadership. They're moving faster to the Republican side of things than ever before. Now they have a serial adulterer who has one of the most irreverent lifestyles I can think of speak in the chapel service. Falwell Sr would never have let this happen.

The feedback I'm getting from faculty and staff is a mixture of sadness and the realization they have little recourse. They realize they have no voice and if they say anything will be removed with no prospects outside of the Liberty world.

I'm interested to see if anyone is getting feedback from their area. A lot of alumni are concerned, deeply concerned for the school. It seems to be rapidly departing from its evangelical, biblical moorings due to the direction of its current president.

    Anyhoo...just an update.

Didn't Dr. Jerry Falwell have unsaved people speak in chapels and graduation services before? If so, how is this news?

People have been declaring the apostasy of Liberty since oh, 1980 or so.

Make your bed with dogs, you're going to get fleas.

BTW, I think this is exactly what the founder had in mind. He wanted to be to rub elbows with the political elite, hello Moral Majority, so now his school is. I would guess he would be applauding the whole time.

When Jerry Falwell founded Liberty University, his goal was not to keep it as a cloistered community but to train young men and women in Christian thought, particularly fundamentalist Christian thought, and send them out into the world. To be sure, many would go into the ministry but he also wanted them to be on Wall Street, Main Street, city halls and the halls of Congress. The idea was for them to be leaven to the world, or as a small light in a darkened room. You can't gain access to the world unless the world knows you, and when the likes of Donald Trump are invited to the campus it provides major inroads for Liberty graduates to get interviews and secure jobs throughout our society. I applaud Liberty's leadership in doing this.

    Leaven...Not so good!

I don't recall of the Bible ANYWHERE using the principle of leaven in a positive light. We're NOT going to be "bringing in the Kingdom" by trying to infiltrate or leaven this world with the Gospel. You won't sneak up on them...you have to unashamedly proclaim it AFTER you do something that is not popular these days.....and that is to SEPERATE from this world as the Bible commands in 2 Cor.6:17. Liberty is heading down the wrong road and the results will not be good. There is still much good going on there....BUT...a "little leaven leaveneth the whole lump" (Gal.5:9) and as the Galatians were "bewitched" by the false teachers of their day so are any that look to the worldly wise and the wisdom of this world for any answers.

I like the story of "there is nothing wrong with the ship in the sea - it when the sea gets into the ship"

I agree with Zenus. Christians often have the "Ron Paul" thinking - complete isolation. Many of us think that our only evangelism is when people walk into our church building.

True evangelism is going out into the world. Yes, we must be careful that the world does not get into us. Bob Harrington is an example

Even within a Bible college - check out the faculty and administration - see how many of them graduated from that very school.

At times we are too closed minded.

When I was in the 9th grade, our social studies (World Geography) class had an interesting first chapter - "Evolution!" (I could see that in Science - but in Social Studies?) Anyways, I wrote up a paper for my teacher explain why I should not be forced to study and be tested on Evolution. I will never forget his answer - and it is one I often quote

"You cant beat your enemy unless you know them"

Back to Liberty - with folks like Ted Kennedy coming to campus - I would trust that later in the classroom, his speech and other issues would be dissected and discussed from a Biblical discussion.

    Salty

PS - do you remember Jerry saying he would love to see Liberty play Notre Dame in a NCAA football game?

Very good point Zenas, society is changed by the Lord changing the hearts of us, one by one. Liberty is/was a very positive influence in this area. Paul always tried to relate to the surrounding community by his example of the unknown god.

There is no telling the totality of the influence that ministries like Liberty have had on this nation. It is certainly a much better approach than the idea of trying to enact morality legislation to change a society, especially when those passing the laws are about as moral as the hat rack sitting in the corner.

You can agree or disagree about the nature of those who are invited to speak at Liberty. In fact, they have many more prominent Christians than they do people of the world. But Jerry Falwell's goal in founding Liberty University was to have its graduates in places of power and influence throughout this country. He believed this would influence the moral direction of our society. Will it really? I guess the jury is still out on that but I know it can't hurt.

Good points, all are making that we are not to be isolated, but are to be salt and light. Jesus didn't isolate Himself, He went out into the world among the sinners and publicans, as well as the vipers in the temple. We are in the world, not of the world.

Don't usually post in this forum, but the title caught my attention. Just my 2 cents, thanks.

    Too Late...

Can't do the haircut.....It's too late for that.....It (the hair) has already departed! I am such a good baptist that even my hair has seperated!

As for being fired...well...it's too late for that too....I already quit!!! Back in June. Seriously, I am currently out of work and looking for a job. Pray that the Lord will lead me and open the door for me to get back to work soon. Things are getting tight. God is good and I know He will take care of us! In the meantime...I still get to use some of this spare time I have posting on the Baptist Board!

    Just To Clarify...

Lady...glad to hear your point of view and just to clarify....I'm not advocating that we should be isolated from the world. Just the opposite, I believe we should, as Jesus did, go out among them into the highways and byways and spread the good news of the Gospel at every opportunity. I'm just saying we should guard the "interior" purity of OUR institutions by not inviting them in to propogate THEIR ungodliness.

    Zenas,
I do understand the point you and Salty are trying to make but this would be no different from inviting the local Imam or the Catholic (so-called) "priest",father so-in-so in to "preach in our pulpits in order to have a "better understanding of their positions". We don't need to invite these kind of people into our churches OR our Christian institutions of "higher learning" to understand or know what they think. There is usually no shortage of sources whereby we can obtain that information. Why should we "LEAVEN" our "holy ground" with their impurities? There are plenty of suitable "forums" for them to use to spread and propogate their message without bringing it into our midst. Guys....I am not close-minded. I watch a lot of news and read a lot of books....I've even watched a lot of the speeches Obama has made here lately because I DO want to know how the mind of this deceiver works....but I sure would NOT want him to be given the freedom to speak from my churches pulpit....or the stage of
my favorite (pick a name) Christian school. We spend so much time and effort trying to banish the devil and his influences from our lives as we seek to live for the Lord. It seems kinda foolish to open wide the door and roll out the welcome mat for his servants.....don't you think? Just my opinion....but there it is! YES...we should "know our enemies and their ways" BUT...there are safer and better ways to do that. I know a little bit about military history and I believe the French resistance or "underground" movement of WW2 would have branded this kind of idea preposterous.

Luke 13:20-21, courtesy of the NASB

And again He said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened.”

Jesus did, in fact, at times isolate himself. He also isolated his disciples for specific teaching. While he reached out to the lost and was in the company of known sinners often, he did not welcome them in to those teaching sessions.

Not to burst any bubbles, but Jerry Jr. Has said that the primary reason he got into UVA law school was because Ted Kennedy gave a call to one of his buds there. This whole guanxi scenario is not necessarily bad, but so Chinese (from one who has lived in the East for 1/3 of his life)!

Jesus said, "It is true that the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of the light." (Luke 16:8 NLT)

While we certainly should place godly wisdom at the very top of our list of desires, it is also important to recognize that while we are in this world we need to take advantage of ALL the resources the Lord places at our disposal to make an eternal difference in the lives of those around us. That in fact is the whole point of Jesus' parable at the beginning of Luke 16.

In my mind that includes the "wisdom of the world". I have often said that people of the world have a better idea of what Christians SHOULD do than the Christians do.

True, but he was included for a purpose that no one else on earth has had or ever will have again.
