My wife and I filled in our absentee ballots late last week. I turned them in this morning at the American Embassy. So they are on their way to our state.

I generally do not believe in early voting, however, I do understand if you are overseas (want to make sure your ballot makes it to your State or Commonwealth in time).

One year, I had to go on emergency leave, so I voted absentee, because, I was not sure, if I would be back in time for the election.

But this early voting in the States by a month or so is totally in proper - and as someone said on another thread - we haven't even heard the debates yet.

I agree with Salty. If one can vote on election day, then that is the time to vote. People like Crabby and service men and women are another story. I voted for Nixon in 1972 by absentee ballot, then again in 1976 for Carter by absentee ballot due to being overseas. From 1980 on, I voted on election day. I did miss the elections held between Presidential elections while overseas.

I know some European countries have several weeks of voting. It is how we set up the laws in each state. It seems there is a trend in this country in various states of voting early, by mail, etc even for people when at home. I really do not know what purpose this serves. Oregon I believe lead the way in this effort.

No absentee ballots except when absolutely necessary. They present too much opportunity for votes to be stolen. No early voting and voter ID required. Set aside two days if necessary.

I could not choose two options. If I could it would be both I will vote early and I will vote by absentee ballot.

My bride and I have voted absentee for several years. Of course we did that while overseas but we started doing it here when the liberals kept moving our polling place. They moved it 3 or 4 times in 2 years. Since then they have settled on one place for a city of 60,000 and its not even a convenient place considering traffic, businesses, and parking.

I have no problem with early voting or absentee ballots. We had to register with ID to get in the system and with every election we have to re-verify by signature. I support voter ID laws.

In the end the election is all in God's hands. I study the issues and the people, then vote my conscience, and trust God with the results.

I can easily understand early voting for military or citizens overseas, but do not think everyone should be allowed to vote early.

For example, everyone voting early now will miss the debates. They may have learned some facts during the debates that would change their vote.

    Here is an article about early voting;

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/28/politics/king-early-voting/index.html

I think the real reason Democrats especially are in favor of early voting is for a psychological advantage over Republicans. They can announce on the news that Democrats have a big lead in early voting which might discourage some Republicans to vote. It also may encourage people who are "sheep" or followers to go with the perceived winner.

I believe early and absentee voting should be strictly limited to those who have difficulty voting, such as military or citizens overseas, or perhaps elderly who cannot get out. Everybody else should be required to show up on election day.

    1. Just because a person votes early does not mean their vote is counted early. This is purely situational. In some cases they are counted but not always.
    2. Most people don't watch the debate. However, that does not matter. It is their choice. They can get informed anyway they choose. They can even choose to remain uninformed.

I have serious doubts about the impact of debates on the opinions of the voter. At this stage most people have made their choice.

In New York - absentee ballots are not counted until 10 days AFTER the election.

I think that kind of thing is more common than we realize. I wonder if that is how the Dem's got our (military votes going into FL) votes tossed in 2000? Were they considered provisional?

We do need to remember that although a winner may be announced on election day it is usually several days before all votes are counted and the election results are certified.
