It isn’t often when you can land two stereotypes in one great story. Who could ask for anything more? A Chinese restaurant in Kentucky was shut down after folks caught them sneaking a trash can full of road kill deer in the back door. Should we chat about the mystery meat at your local all-you-can-eat China Buffett or (with my apologies to my dear brothers and sisters in the great state of Kentucky) the redneck penchant for eating roadkill. I’ve already come to two conclusions: I’m staying away from Main Moon Buffett for a while and I prefer watching my venison through a scope. Fresh off the grill should mean a Weber not a Buick.
    The rest of the story

I know a guy up here in the Great State of New Jersey that is a state Restaurant inspector. He has indicated to me on more than one occasion that when inspecting a Chinese Restaurant, protocol generally dictates scheduling out the whole work day to dedicate to the task at hand.

    Yummy!!!!!

Too Funny.........I've always wondered just what kind of meat that is on those little sticks!!! I can just about eat my weight in those!

Seriously...I know of a chinese restaurant years ago just outside of Charlottesville Virginia (where we lived at the time) that got closed down by the health department when they found several dead and skinned cats hanging on meathooks in the walk-in cooler. I've thought about that many times when I've eaten Chinese food. I also had a missionary friend years ago whose dogs got stolen for food in the Philippines. A Philippino I worked with once told me that dog (especially black ones) are considered a delicacy there. He told me that some folks even raise them for that purpose. Roll over rover....we need to cook the other side too!!:laugh::smilewinkgrin:

Fret not, Brother. They'll reopen within a week. In the meantime you'll have to chow down at EATS unless y'all have one of those upscale establishments call FOOD.

    2) Yes, Madam, there IS such a place as the WHITE TRASH CAFE on Bransford Av in Nashville TN!

    3) Come this here New Years, THE place to BE is located in an area near Brasstown and Murphy in SW NC. Its name is called Clay's Corner. Instead of the "Ball Drop," they observe the POSSEUM DROP!!!!:thumbsup::laugh:

    War? How about a recipe?

    How to cook Didelphis Marsupialis.

1 five gallon pot of heavily salted water
1 five pound sack of potatoes
1 five pound sack of Vadallia onions
    1 opossum preferably dead

Bring the five gallons of water to a rolling boil. That's arollin' burl for most of you. Dump in the potatoes, onions and opossum (preferably dead) into the water. Make holy water out of the mixture. In other words just boil the you-know-what out of it. Reduce to a simmer. Check frequently and skim off the foamy scum that comes to the top. Keep cooking until it doesn't smell like boiling opossum.

Drain and rinse with the garden hose. Give the opossum to the dog and eat the potatoes and onions.

Now I'm intrigued, what does boiled opossum smell like....is is more like boiled ground hog or muskrat? Guess the onions serve to mask the smell, right!

This thread is just too funny!

First. I am a redneck! Been one a long time and will be one till our Saviour calls me home. (No I don't have all the "traditional" trapping associated with "rednecks". -- just to clarify, a bit. )

To set the record straight. Unless it's mangled from the impact with a car, there's nothing wrong with venison obtained by that method. As long as it's timely and properly field dressed in the same manner as one brought down bow or a rifle. (Since bow season came in, I've helped process 2 bow kills for the freezer.)

It's been an interesting study over the years about how our culture influences what we will and won't eat. Growing up on a farm in rural NC with depression era parents, I learned to eat much that is now viewed with distain, and sometimes disgust by others. When my parents slaughtered an animal for the table, little was wasted. No animal was slaughtered just for sport and the meat discarded, as so often happens today. "Sportsmen" will kill deer. After showing them off to their friends, the body is dumped along side the road somewhere. No longer fit for human consumption. Yet, we have people coming to our church asking for food to put on their tables.

One aspect of our changing culture is reflected at the grocery store meat counter. By the time the animal has been commercially processed and select pieces packaged like a Christmas present, the association (and reality) with the animal on the hoof is being lost. Younger generations can't *see* the link between God's creations and the food on their tables.

From experience.... kids won't eat those dirty potatoes or carrots they see pulled from the ground in our garden and put on the table for them. Instead, they want McDonald French fries. Kids will gobble up beef dishes with relish. That is unless they learn it's Bambi.

God created all the life on earth. He gave plants first for nourishment of our bodies. At the time of Noah, He included animals, with restrictions, until they were lifted in the NT. Matthew 15: (KJB) 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. At some point in the future, we'll become plant eaters again when blood is no longer shed.

For now, and for the most part, our cultural differences determine what we consider animal food to be fit for man to consume. Taste/flavor comes in second. As many won't even try a taste, if given the opportunity to partake of what God has given.

For whatever it's worth, this old redneck, has been blessed with the opportunity to taste, and often, enjoy many of God's gifts. Part of that blessing has been hands on prep of what God has provided from the fields and woods of our region. And to partake of some He provided to other areas.

Therefore, I can both laugh at some of the jokes and think about what folks are missing, too. Last I heard, it's illegal to sell venison in NC taken by sportsmen. Yet, people are going hungry, while the meat rots along side our roads. (Yes, there is a processing plant with the meat given to those in need. However, there's distance and other factors involved that limit the usefulness.)

Yep, you guys are having too much fun. :)

    So am I. :D:D
Venison roasts, bear stew, frog legs, rattlesnake, swan, chitlins, fried quail, rabbit slowdown, groundhog and rice, squirrel slick, "Q'd"beaver, wild turkey salad, chevon steak, pork chops, calf liver, ostrich nuggets, and so much more............

Trust me OT, some of my family stayed out of the Anthracite mines by being Butchers & Poultry Men....seen it all. We not only cut the meat ...we raised & slaughtered it, ate it & sold it.

I still have chickens in my back yard & the eggs are fresh every morning. It is a shame that up here in the great state of New Jersey, that so many just kill these animals & leave carcases by the side of the road to rot. Luckily we have got a place that houses various animals like bear & wounded bobcats & various other animals so the road kill is often delivered up there for food. Thank God it gets used.

Some advice from experience. If you've never cleaned a road kill deer, DON'T open them up! It's like a blender went off inside them. Take what hams, shoulders, back strap you can get off the carcass without 'field dressing' them, trim away the bruised meat, and be done with it.

They way they spice up their food, I'd eat shoe leather if they offered it.

Understood. Everyone of them has to be handled according to the circumstances involved. Glad you posted the reminder, as I used field dressing as a generic term. Sometimes one brought down by a rifle or bow shouldn't be "traditionally" field dressed either. For the same reason. Have seen the results of poor marksmanship. Remember butcherng one that a (what's a polite word) shot through the hip, just because he had a shot. Due to the angle, there wasn't much left that could be salvaged.
