I'm of the opinion that the while church should close. This latest scandal is just that, the latest scandal.

The corruption of that place has been documented for years. Add to that extreme legalism and downright heresy, the church is no better than any other organization in history that has used religion for power and wealth.

What do you think? I don't think that place would allow a pastor that could turn that place around and I am not sure a decent pastor would take the position.

If I was a betting man, I'd lay money on it dying a slow, lingering death.

Those kind of churches will continue on w/ the same strategy as always... find a fundie rockstar to get behind and follow that man until he moves on... continue this process as necessary. This is the secret to their "success" w/ the last 2 "pastors" and it will continue to be this way. They just need to find the next person to idolize and blindly follow and they will do fine.

I tend to agree with both of you. Yes, they will try the same old tactics, but with each scandal, they will continue to decline.

I had never heard of that IFB church, or that pastor, until the recent sex scandal.

But having done some research the last few days, I have come to the conclusion that that *church* and ministry have been a seething den of iniquity and hellishness for a long long time.

    God have mercy.

Very strict rules of dress, music etc. Also, Hyles claimes that the use of the KJV in evangelism was required for salvation, which goes beyond the normal error of the KJV Only doctrine and crosses the line into heresy.

    Thankfully....

Thankfully....God doesn't allow any of us on this forum to have the singular privilege of being the Judge and Jury for FBC Hammond. Like many other places in Christendom there are many folks there who have been victimized by poor leadership and a general lack of discernment about what is scripturally right or wrong. Of course...people want to trust their Pastor and the leaders of their church and it is never anything less than traumatic when they suddenly find that they can't.We can sit here and pass judgement on them....or tend to the BEAM that is (many times) in our own eye. It is easy for us to assume the role of "armchair quarterback" and pontificate on how things should be done when we "don't have a dog in that hunt". You can be sure....right or wrong...good or bad (regarding FBC as a body of believers) there are a lot of people there who are hurting and need help. We need to pray for them sincerely.

I'm not saying that everything that has been said here thus far is wrong but we do need to be careful . In my early years as a Christian I was greatly blessed by some of the things I heard preached by Dr. Hyles. It wasn't ALL wrong. I also was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and a student at Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville Fla. under Dr.Bob Gray's ministry. I was saddened and disappointed to say the least to hear of both men's sins in later years. I do believe they were saved men....but I do believe they will both suffer great loss at the JSOC. We must all beware....Satan seeks to "sift" us all and will do whatever it takes through the weaknesses of our flesh to destroy us and any good influence we have for our Saviour. He knows he can't have our souls but he hates us because he hates our God and our Saviour. I wouldn't give a plug nickel for the flesh of any of us. Be humble,be careful, and pray for those in need.

"A little leaven leavens the whole lump."

    - The Apostle Paul

Although no leader is perfect, we should not use the "beam" excuse to prevent the rightful exercise of "fruit inspection." A close examination of Hyles' ministry "tree" reveals much rotten fruit.

You mean normal KJVOnlyism didn't cross the line to heresy?

The standard KJVO position limits its errors to Bibliology. The Hyles' position added Soteriology to the mix.

Yes, most KJVO people will be sure to note that they do not think that people who use an ESV or NKJV are not saved. Hyles took it further than this. Reading an NIV would not make you lose your salvation, but if, at some point, a KJV was not used, you were never saved in the first place.

I am opposed to KJVO as much as anyone (I grew up in it) but to reverse things, I don't think believing in KJV only will make you a heretic either. (Thought many heretics are in fact KJVO)

Greg, the church in Hammond is way beyond the "Good church with a few problems" status.

Bad doctrine, bad preaching, bad conduct. No better than the Catholic church at the time of the reformation.
