There have been dozens of threads started relating to the debate, and how it changed the dynamic of the election. The news of 7.8% just cancelled and reversed that. If one wants to ensure Obama is defeated, then the only solution if to fight like there is no tomorrow until election day. Obama is still ahead. The debate was only a temporary event. We tend to grasp at straws and cling to a single event, putting all hope of victory on the debate. That is a sure sign Romney is in trouble.

Why did it become news the day after it would have been most useful?

There were some predictions a few days before the debate that the numbers were going to drop. Besides, they're trying to offset 2 things: the "no sitting president has been re-elected with unemployment over 8%"; and his disappointing debate performance. Wouldn't want to put out good numbers and then perform poorly.

The jobs numbers come out on the first Friday of the month. There is no conspiracy with the timing of the numbers. The jobs report for October, due out on November 2nd, the Friday before the election, is predicted to show the unemployment rate at 7.9% up from 7.8% reported today.

I stopped paying attention to these government reports because they lie. How on Earth do you have the audacity to tell me that the unemployment rate dropped just because you decided to no longer count 300,000 plus folks who just gave up looking? This gets people excited?

In the words of Neal Boortz, bunch of myrmidons.

The unemployment rate is actually closer to 11.5%, give or take a couple tenths.

(That's not counting all of the professional protestors, vote "gatherers", and Black Panther Party "doorkeepers" on the Democratic payroll. Maybe another tenth or so for them.)

The economy is beginning to improve. This isn't the direct, or sole result of the President's initiatives. (As a larger point I just don't think that any President can dramatically improve an economy for the better in the short term.) One of the big issues for both parties right now is that the economy is looking to shift back to a more productive economy by the end of next year. (We will never return to dominance.)

So whoever wins gets the benefits of that improvement.

Father jobs report is weird, I wonder how many people are dropping out because they are giving up in finding work? That said, I have doubt the economy is improving...for now.

The government giving inaccurate date is a given. It is not just not counting those who have given up looking, it fails to factor in those who are working way below their skill level and part time. Thanks for all the replys. My point is this is a marathon until election day. Hanging a hat on one event like a flawed debate performance is a fatal mistake.
