Like gay marriage, some states allow first cousins to marry each other and some do not. Do you think first cousins should be allowed to marry or do you think it should be prohibited by law?

That also raises the issue of interstate recognition of such unions. For example, New York allows first cousins to marry but Mississippi does not. If a first cousin couple marries in New York and then moves to Mississippi, should the State of Mississippi be required to recognize their marriage?

This is not a new situation. Depending on the state, first cousin marriages have taken place since the founding of the Republic (if not before). It has noting to do with the current marriage debate.

Article IV, Section 1 of the Constitution of the Rebublic of these here US of A DOES state:

"Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State."

Therefore, IMHO, it'd seem as though this whole argument over whether or not a valid first cousin marriage in one state should be upheld as valid in another state is a rather moot question.

Oh, that's right.....silly me.....thinking that the current judiciary is going to uphold such a blatantly un-constitutional thing as the Constitution!!!!!

    What was I thinking??!!?? :tonofbricks:

Again, you're conflating two different issues.

You're forgetting about the Public Policy Exception to the Full Faith and Credit Clause.

That's nice, but could you please answer the question in the OP?

Personally, IMHO, I wouldn't marry ANY of MY 1st cousins!!!

    Why?

    1) Because the immutable God has given me the life-long, permanent "'Gift' of Celibacy"!!!! Therefore, for me to MARRY ANY ONE would be A DIRECT and OVERT VIOLATION OF GOD'S WILL; THUS CAUSING TO LOSE WHAT EVER FEW "REWARDS" I MAY HAVE HAD IF I HAD REMAINED UNMARRIED UNTIL THE DAY I DIE!!!!!
    and, also
    2) ALL OF MY 1ST COUSINS ARE LOST men!!! (The "last time I checked," I am a male as well!!) WERE I TO marry any one of them, then I guess I'd be in TRIPLE JEOPARDY come the "BEMA SEAT"!!!

I have enough to keep me occupied 24/7/365(-6) w/out adding additional onuses!!!!!!!

I don't see any religious prohibition about it and it seems common in some cultures, so I'm not sure why it's banned in the first place.

The idea makes me throw up a little in my mouth, but if it's far enough away in the genetic pool and there's no Biblical mandate against it, what's the problem?

Each state is on its own, but there are also benefits to interstate recognitions on certain laws.

In states that allow first cousin marriages, Old Regular could marry Janet Reno.

    ARTICLE IV: STATES

    Section 2
The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States.

A Person charged in any State with Treason, Felony, or other Crime, who shall flee from Justice, and be found in another State, shall on Demand of the executive Authority of the State from which he fled, be delivered up, to be removed to the State having Jurisdiction of the Crime.

No Person held to Service or Labour in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in Consequence of any Law or Regulation therein, be discharged from such Service or Labour, but shall be delivered up on Claim of the Party to whom such Service or Labour may be due.

For those bringing up the Full Faith and Credit clause, remember back in the day the anti-miscegenation of some states. What was legal in one state wasn't (to the point of lynching) in another.

Here is a quote by a Constitutional attorney of 24 years comparing gay marriage and marriage to first cousins in relation tot the Full Faith and Credit clause.

"Full faith and credit means that if you get married in Virginia, it is recognized in Maryland. The issue is going to be tested as some states allow gay marriage, but other states say it is illegal and will not recognized.

Now, if two first cousins from Utah, who want to marry, they can't in Utah, but can go to a state that does, like California. Then they can return to Utah, they are legally married in Utah. (an aside. If you are Mormon and do the above, you cannot get sealed in Utah,,,they won't do it but if you move to a state like California to live, you can get it sealed)"

Personally, the idea of marrying a first cousin is ridiculous. Even in the case of adoption by one of the parents, the idea of marrying a first cousin on the adopted side by one of the kids to me is out of bounds IMO.

I don't quite know how to research it. But, I think first cousin marriages are not all, that new. Somehow, I get the feeling many here think the concept has just blazed onto the scene.

It started back when genetics/evolution was first discovered and investigated. But most Baptists don't "believe in" genetics/evolution thus the topic should be moot. <G>

Sorry to disappoint, but I believe in genetics though not evolution. From my recollection, the practice evolved in order:

    • to keep family money/property in the family.

    • to provide marriage partners when the selection pool was rather thin.

How does one look "with spirit" to resolve a situation? How does a Christian disregard the law when we have been commanded to obey it?
