ATHENS, Georgia – A Republican lawmaker said in videotaped remarks that evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory are "lies straight from the pit of hell" meant to convince people that they do not need a savior.

Georgia Rep. Paul Broun made those comments during a speech Sept. 27 at a sportsman's banquet at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell. Broun, a medical doctor, is running for re-election in November unopposed by Democrats.

"God's word is true," Broun said, according to a video posted on the church's website. "I've come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it's lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior."

He probably serves on the science committee right next to Congressman Akin.

I'm just sad that a church gave him a platform to abuse like this.

    Huh????

PLEASE tell me you are being facetious!!!! I wish more politicians had the convictions and the nerve to get up and tell the truth like that. Our country might not be in the shape it is if they did. Evolution is a Satanic Lie That contradicts the absolute authority of the Word of God beginning with the true history found in Genesis chapters 1-11. If you can't believe the Bible beginning there then you have no grounds for believing the rest of the Book is true.

    Embryology? From hell?

Obviously the man does not even know what the word means. What astounding ignorance!

Anyone that ignorant in one area of science is surely just as ignorant in other areas. Yes, it does strike as ignorant at Akin's comment or rape and pregnancy.

May the good Lord help us survive such ignorant politicians.

This fellow and many others do not realize that while the Bible contains no errors that their interpretation contains many errors ... and that is true for all of us. For a person to believe their interpretation is without error is arrogance beyond belief.

    DITTO!

Frankly, it amazes me when born again Christians constantly complain about the direction government leaders are taking this country. Yet, when a leader stands for the Bible, many find ways to find fault - to tear him down. No wonder few speak up. No wonder few run for office in the first place.

No wonder God fearing pastors are leaving the pulpit. No wonder they are being replaced with "feel good" preachers who don't step on anyone's toes.

    Amos 8: KJB

11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it.

    Revelaton 3: KJB

15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

    You've got to be kidding!

    "Broun, a medical doctor"
"He sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology."

Embryos, Genes, and Evolution. The Developmental – Genetic Basis of Evolutionary Change. [Hardcover] http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VQ763M/?tag=baptis04-20

These are just a few of the many, many, many links available that supports Broun's statements on evolution theories and embroyology.

    Uhmmmmm.............. Best left unsaid.

As I said, "May the good Lord save us from such ignorance."

It does not matter what committee he sits on, ignorance is still ignorance.

How much more evidence do you need to confirm that embryology is used as "evidence" for evolution. From grade school I was taught that embryo studies provided proof of evolution. Even though one of the examples used for this proof has been determined to be faked, it's still used in textbooks today.

Do you fall back on the term "ignorance" because you can't refute his position in any other manner?

One more link, below, showing the relationship between some aspects of embryology and evolution. If you need more, I can supply a long list of them. If you have children and they are in school, their science/biology books, in all likelyhood can confirm, this, as well.

Perhaps, instead of giving evidence that he is correct, maybe I should be asking if you believe in evolution instead of Creation? If you don't, what is your motive for calling this doctor of medicine ignorant?

Then the OP is a dishonest statement. The OP makes a blanket statement that all embryology is from hell. Now you are say it has been used to support evolution. The OP should have pointed this out.

A blanket statement that all embryology is evil is an exceedingly ignorant statement and it makes the fellow look ignorant when, as in the OP, such is stated.

After all the Bible has been misused to support terrible ideas. From the misuse of the Bible a person could make an erroneous statement claiming the Bible is evil. Of course just because the Bible has been misused and misused for evil does not mean the Bible is evil. It is the misuse that is evil. Big difference.

Like many things it is in the interpretation that we get in trouble.

The congressman is absolutely correct, and the responses CBT and preachinjesus teach us the necessity of learning to be as subtle as serpents as commanded by the Lord.

The Congressman's words are true, however, if I had to guess, like any other politician, it is a position he takes to help with reelection. In reality, my guess is he could care less about Scripture. He would say the sky is green to get reelected. Politicians do not care about abortion, morality, Scripture or anything else. Like leeches, they attach to any idea that keeps them in power.

Yes, I saw the video. First of all, why is a politician addressing a congregation? A church is the House of God, not a forum for self promotion. Secondly, why is anyone telling a local Baptist congregation that evolution and the big bang theory are "from the pits of hell." Is there anyone there who would believe otherwise? It begs the question, why is he there?

For longer than I can count, right wing politicians have been using God, Jesus Christ, Holy Scripture, and any other sacred object that will garner votes. Unopposed or not, the goal is self glory.

Why am I leary of this particular politician? Because anyone who keeps up with government and politics has heard this name before. Just another in the long line of self serving, power hungry slobs that care nothing about the Constitition or serving American citizens.

It is obvious his motives are self serving, conservative or not. I would not vote for him for dog catcher, and he certainly would not get a forum to speak at my church.
