Hey folks in the Northeast, let us know that all is well when you get the chance.

We're only getting the back end of the front coming from the west down here in Atlanta. But the wind has been gusting since yesterday at about 30 to 40 mph. Seemingly much harder at times.

Hope the trees can take it.

I bet he's afraid that this'll end up becoming Obama's Katrina.

I was a senior at Gulfport High School when Hurricane Camille hit in 1969. We lost our house, and got no government help. In fact, my parents had to fight the insurance company over an arguement as to whether the wind knocked down the house first or the rising waters took out the house first. I believe we won.

The winds in that hurricane were clocked at 200 mph.

I'm on Long Island and so far so good but we will get the worst later today and tonight. Our power company said to expect being without power for 7-10 days. All schools are closed as is Starbucks!

I well remember when Hurricane Hazel roared through central North Carolina in 1954.

Living on a farm at the time, we suffered damage to buildings, equipment, and crops. For example, a shelter collapsed onto a combine (wheat/corn harvester). The nearby river flooded almost mature/mature crops that had already suffered wind damage. It took my father hours with a chain saw to clear fallen trees so we could get off our farm by vehicle. I don't have any idea, now, how long we went without power.

While there was public assistance along coast, I don't remember seeing any help around here. People did lose their homes and their livelyhood in this rural area. Neighbor helped neighbor after the initial impact of the storm and later to begin the recovery process. Back in those days, few rural folks had insurance. And, they didn't expect to hold out their hands to the government for help.

Hope you're hunkered down and have preps in place to ride it out. And, other than having to cope with the loss of power, that all will be well with you and yours.

The worst is that Starbucks is closed!!! What will people do?

Seriously, praying for you all. Do you all have stuff stored? As you are able, let us know!

We're really in good shape here, I believe.

    * Freezer is inventoried and food is removed to use over the next few days. There rest of the freezer is packed with gallons of water that I put in days ago to freeze so it's FULL and locked.

    * We have plenty of food to eat - and we can cook thanks to my gas stove. A match is all we need to light a burner.

    * We will have a cooler set up in a little bit for the refrigerated stuff we'll need over the next few days. If we lose our power for more than 4 hours, I'll clean out the fridge and toss everything.

    * Outside is pretty much secure and my van is in the garage. The other cars are on different parts of the driveway in case a tree comes down - so it won't hit more than one car.

    * All electronics are charged, we have a ton of batteries and light sources. We have an emergency radio that winds up so we can hear the news.

    * Firewood is brought in although it's not cold and our heat is turned all the way down anyway. But it's nice and cozy if we have no power. We have 2 fireplaces to use.

    * I have some water stored although most likely the water source will be fine. We even have a gas hot water heater so we will still be able to take hot showers.

    * Everything we have to do is canceled - except the grocery store where my daughters work but we will not allow them to go in at least for today. The storm is to be worst from 6 pm to 6 am and my oldest is scheduled to work 4:30 - 10. There is no way I'm driving down these tree-lined streets in 85 mph winds to get her there.

So we're good, I believe. The biggest concerns we have are the tree out front but if the winds continue in this direction, it would fall away from the house/cars. Also, the marina where we put the boat for the winter is very secure for everything except very high tidal surges which we are due to get. If it's much more than about 5', the boat will most likely be lost. That will be sad but it's insured and we're going into winter so we can deal with that for now. :)

Thanks for thinking of us!! I'll post as I can.

Yea right....My wife bought Peanut butter & Jelly and a loaf of bread. Then she got 2 candles.

If this is the perfect storm, I hope it kills me quick so I dont have to sit in the dark with her eating PBJ sandwiches. LOL.

LOL - I'm a preparer. I've been on the Red Cross Disaster Team and I'm one who'd rather have everything in place than to be caught off guard! The ONLY thing I'm kicking myself over is our large generator that doesn't put out a charge. Needless to say, that is going into the shop ASAP to get worked on and if it doesn't work, we're getting a new one. I was even eyeballing the whole house generators that run on natural gas (which we have) but I would have to sell a kidney to get it. LOL

I highly doubt it. We're 2 hours off of the first high tide and we've got massive flooding near the water. Our most dangerous high tide will be tonight when the storm is actually here. Over 15,000 out of power in my county with the storm not even really here yet.

Plus, didn't you see? THEY CLOSED STARBUCKS!!! THE END IS NEAR!!!

LOL - Fortunately, we have a stove top perculator that works GREAT!

I *thought* we'd be okay here, after all, we already had our storm and week long power outage back during the hottest part of the summer.

I just heard a loud noise and found out the big tree next to our house lost a huge limb. It came crashing down over the creek and driveway and missed my car by a few feet. God is watching out for us, because the branch SHOULD have crushed my car and taken out our footbridge near the house. God, in his mercy, also let the limb break up so we could scoot it just far enough for us to unblock the driveway. It's about 30 feet long, but the largest piece that broke off is about 20 feet and it's too heavy for the girls and I to lift and move any further.

Wow. We're in a little valley with hills on 3 sides of the house, so the wind isn't even hitting us full-force, AND we're not even in the *bad* range of this storm.
