Fresh off his "climate disruption"-driven endorsement of President Obama, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has chosen to divert critical food supplies and power generators from desperate residents of Staten Island to Sunday's New York City Marathon. Gothamist reports:

[T]hose urging the city to halt the run believe that the thousands of Marathon volunteers could direct their efforts towards post-Sandy relief and cleanup, "and they also argue that the event will divert thousands of police from important hurricane-related duties." But despite petitions circulating, work started up again yesterday on the Marathon route.

A tipster, who wishes to remain anonymous, told us there were lots of workers in and out of the park today, who had "started before the storm and then came back starting yesterday." Trailers are lined up from around 71st to 66th Streets on Central Park West, a food truck was set up today, and "generators have been sitting there at least a week." The tents that were taken down prior to the storm have also been set back up, and there is a stage set up near 73rd Street.

I saw a report of this on the news this morning. Film crew with pictures of massive generators sitting idle. Those generators could be running gas pumps for stations closed by power failures. News keeps showing those long lines.

    Disgusting isn't it?

"What's emerging now is a political elite that is oblivious to the needs of the People"

Let's give credit where credit is due though. The Red Cross showed up with hot chocolate and cookies.

And to think people here called me paranoid after my sticky thread of survival disaster links went up after Katrina. I was looking that over this weekend and found some dead links I reckon now is a good time to go through and update it.

"While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division," said Bloomberg.

A few hours earlier, Bloomberg told a press conference that holding the marathon would be a morale and money boost for the city.

“If you think back to 9/11, I think Rudy [Giuliani] made the right decision to run the marathon,” Bloomberg said of his predecessor after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. “It pulled people together and we have to find some ways to express ourselves and show solidarity to each other.”

Never said he was the sharpest knife in the drawer. From what I read he knuckled under top the pressure from the mayors of the surrounding communities and the borough of Staten Island. As I understand it, Staten Island was hard hit by Sandy and is also the traditional location of the marathon's starting line.

If I had any money I'd bet Bloomberg is too busy thinking up ways to grab more power and federal funds than "pulling people together" and finding ways to ease their suffering.

Nanny Bloomberg sounds kind of jealous of ole Rudie doesn't he? I mean Rudie made a big name for himself riding on the backs of suffering New Yorkers so Bloomberg must be wondering why he can't do the same.

It's jokers like this that convinced me to get of New York while the gettin was good.
