I would appreciate totally honest answers to the poll. It would be good to know what percent of the population really has the survival skills during a period of total anarachy. That would range from protecting your family, to knowing how to start a fire, find water, food, build a shelter, first aid, etc........

Yes, if owning a couple of pistols count.

It is the timing that worries me. People have been crying wolf since 1960. If I worried about earthquakes I would be more worried about the Big One than politics.

If the war has been fought and we lost then I can't see a logical reason why our owners would want anarchy in this decade. Don't see what they would gain.

Why yes, and if you act in the next 50 minutes, I will double the water jugs, ammo, portable tent, and stove if you will pay the shipping. In addition, if you tell your friends and neighbors, I will take off one payment.

I think we'd have a pretty good chance since all of us can start a fire with one match, live near the water, etc. I'm sure in a "all heck breaks loose" kind of situation, we'd be struggling but I think we'd do OK overall. A large part of survival is mental and seeing the different responses to Sandy really showed me that. We're "get-her-done-ers" rather than sitting and waiting for someone else to do it and I think that would assist us quite a bit.

    Get yourself the following:

    Hennesy Expedition Hammock

    Outdoor Research Aurora bivy bag

    You can then sleep anywhere!

If you live in the country, plant 2 or more pecan trees. Varieties such as Kansa, Osage, Major, will live as far North as Canada, and provide you with hundreds of pounds of pecans. Graft the graftwood onto freeze resistant rootstock! Do not just buy trees from a nursery! Do it yourself. And get disease resistant varieties.

In 5-7 years, you'll be eating pecans.

The answer for us is yes and no.

    For the yes part...

Unless a wildfire completely destroys everything thing on our property and the surrounding area, we'll be OK. Already have in place, several alternatives if our house, itself is destroyed. Tree crashes through the roof, for example. An old refurbished travel trailer in place, 7 person tent with cots and such are two of them. A third is that my workshop has a castiron wood stove for heat and cooking + a full sized propane cookstove. And it has a utility sink. Cots or mattresses can be put in place for sleeping. If the need arises, already have a primative camp location nearby that can be ready within a few hours. And, a couple of others that I won't mention on line.

    Protecting family, in place.

Multiple ways to start a fire, even when there are no matches or Bic lighters. Flint & steel and battery previously mentioned. Good quality small magnifying glass. Quartz, plentiful around here, will cast a spark if struck correctly.

Water - If the need arises, within a few hours we can convert our well from a pump to buckets & chain, like I used as a kid. The key piece of equipment (pulley - tickle) is waiting to be used. To back this up, there's a small creek in the back 40 - water has to be treated as there are beaver upstream. Within a mile of the house there are several ponds, springs, and a polluted larger stream. A kids Radio Flyer wagon makes transporting water much easier. (Plus a host of other uses from a temporary grill, carrying heavier BOB's, small child hauler, etc. & etc.)

Food - Yes - on hand and ability to forage, along with the ability to preserve same. - Salt curing, pressure & water bath canning, dehydrating with/without electricity. Hot smoker and plans in place for a cold smoker. Root cellar is a limitation, although we do have the means to cellar small amounts.

First Aid - several first aid kits that are periodically checked and re-stocked if certain items have expired. If you have one with latex gloves, these need to be replaced periodically, too. They have a limited useful life, even when in storage. Add at least one pair of nitrile gloves.

Now for the no part of this.

Due to various restrictions, including shelf life, we may run out of needed prescription drugs. A doctor may not be available, if one of us needs emergency care. Better half has been in the hosptial several times in recent years. -- One of the pitfalls that many oldtimers will have to face.

In a worst case situtation, many discuss hords of city folks raiding the countryside. Yes, that's possible, even here off the beaten path. What many don't consider, if neighbors and extended family become hungry enough, they, too can become an even more deadly threat. For example, a neighbor near by, a good friend, will put feeding his children ahead of our friendship, if he becomes desperate enough. Why more deadly? Because we may not think twice when John stops by for a visit.

This no part used to worry me, but not nearly as much today. Our Lord won't call me home until He is ready. When He's ready, I am, too.

I voted no because it depends on what you mean by total anarchy. If you're talking riots for a few days due to a power outage, probably yes. If we're talking massive bombings and armed gangs or terrorist invasion and resulting chaos, I'm not so sure.

I am too old but my oldest granddaughter's husband has survival skills. He might look after his spouse's GMom and GDad. I might be able to fire a shot if necessary, don't really know!

It is not starting a fire folks, it is protecting yourself!

I think where you're located is key.

'Anarchy' can mean something other than disorder, violence & mayhem, it can simply mean no governmental oversight or control over individuals.

From past experience of (2) extended periods of power outages due to ice storms I'm pretty certain that during an extended period of absence of government folks in general in my locale would be more inclined to unite and work together to survive. Probably this would not be the case in some of the metropolitan areas of the country.

Katrina taught us that. Breaking into stores for water and food is one thing. Carting off wide screen televisions while wading through water to a home without electricity is quite another.

Anarchy does mean no government or control over individuals. The result of anarchy is chaos when the base instincts of sin filled men take control. Since the days of Cain and Able, history has taught this over and over again.

Our neighborhood used to be more like your location. Generally people here would work together to do what they could to help each other. I've lived long enough to see that happen more than once. (Ice storms and hurricanes)

However, with the building boom of the 90's much of that changed. Rural areas like mine became bedroom communities for the larger metro areas. Along with city folks going "country" that also lured in more looking for easy pickings. Gang activity was unheard of 20 years ago around here. Now local small town governments are forced to spend time dealing with this issue on a regular basis.

Agree 100%, where you live is the key to much of this discussion. That's why earlier part of my response was NO. Twenty to thirty years ago, this portion of my NO would have been a not likely to happen around here. Neighbors would have made sure that "John's" kids were not starving to the point John would kill his friends for food for his children. Now, there are not enough self-sufficient rural neighbors to help everyone in the bedroom communities. The odds have gone up that, if chaos reigns, one of John's friendly visits may not end as the previous ones have in the past.

2 Reasons for Preaching on Skid Row....

....to lead the lost to Christ [the most important of them, or course]. And to build up a group of [street] survivors I could turn to if there were ever a need to be on the streets, alone and in need. I figured these guys knew me, and I could always seek out their help. Many told me they'd be there for me if that day came.
