The prospect of a renewed assault weapons ban in the wake of the Connecticut school massacre has set of a round of buying, as thousands of Americans head to their local gun store to secure the popular AR-15 -- the model used by the school gunman -- before potential government prohibitions on their purchase.

They are also buying the .223 ammunition used by the AR-15 and the type of high-capacity magazines covered under the last federal assault weapons ban, which Congress let expire without renewing.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation says it set a new record for single-day background check submittals this past weekend.
In San Diego, Northwest Armory gun store owner Karl Durkheimer said Saturday "was the biggest day we've seen in 20 years. Sunday will probably eclipse that."
In southwest Ohio, from dawn to dusk a Cincinnati gun show had a line of 400 waiting to get in, said Joe Eaton of the Buckeye Firearms Association.

"Sales were through the roof on Saturday," said Eaton. "People were buying everything they could out of fear the president would try to ban certain guns and high-capacity magazines."

Can anyone say "knee-jerk reaction"? It affects both the liberals and the conservatives.

And if the murder rate, or accidental shooting of family members goes up, will you be happy?

I think it is a reaction to any possible new laws more than anything else.

In time cooler heads will prevail, I believe.

On one hand we have the extreme ban-them-all folks. This is an expected knee jerk reaction. I can sympathize. I want to raise my boys in a safe environment and it is understandable to want to remove all threats to their safety. In the end this is not practical. Adding a new law will only add one more charge to the list against the shooter. He has already broken dozens of them, he won't care about breaking a few more. Besides, in most of these cases the shooter is dead and will not be charged at all.

On the other extreme we have those rushing out to buy a gun, or another gun, and wanting to lock their kids away. This is also understandable. It is also not the answer. We cannot protect our kids from every threat.

The problem is when both extremes are lived out by a motivation of fear. Fear is a bad motivator as it will corrupt almost every decision we make. There is a reason why it is advisable to not make any major decisions to soon after a tragedy. For example, no major decisions should be made within 6 months of a divorce or death of a spouse. Here we are, still in the midst of a horribly tragic event, emotions are raw and rational thinking is only attained with some effort.

I admit I am considering buying another gun. I have been thinking about this for several months now. I am not motivated by fear. My motivation is my understanding of my responsibility to provide for my family and a desire to protect the people around me (whether at the mall, at church, or just out and about living my life). I have training as a veteran and as former security guard. I will not, however, buy a gun now. I want to be sure I have a healthy distance between me and the shooting.

As to CTB, you following Mark around and harassing him in all these threads only shows how ignorant you are of the situation and of the beliefs held by him. These types of posts are beneath you and do not help further the discussion.

    I don't know.
New firearms come with trigger locks. Many used firearms still have them too. That is a good thing. You may also be able to get one free from your local sheriff station.

Keep in mind you can only make reasonable steps to safeguard your firearms. If someone really wants them, they will get them.

I'm more of the opinion that gun safety is something that should be taught from an early age. I learned to handle weapons safely and shoot on my grandfather's farm in Indiana. Too many kids today know nothing about guns except from playing video games and they do not consciously link the danger from the games to reality.

Agreed. That's how I was raised and it's how I am raising my sons. I even lock up their BB guns like my long guns.

I do not own a gun safe. Instead I keep a loaded weapon in most rooms in my home. What if I'm on the john when some creep breaks in ?

How many more kids choke to death on toys than get shot to death ? Should we put matchbox cars in safes ?

How about accidental electrocutions ? Or falls ? Or drown in pools ? What are the numbers. What percantage of dead children are killed by guns ?

You keep a loaded weapon in most rooms in your home? I hope you don't have children at home. One of our friends lost a child due to an accidental shooting in their home.

I do not own a gun. I never have. My husband has a couple for hunting, but they are never loaded unless he is actually out hunting.

Jason.....Im keeping in mind that the woman who owned the guns allowed a troubled kid access to firearms & ammunition.

I have a friend who was trained in the military in hand to hand. He was also trained in firearms & when he came home he got a job in his fathers auto garage in South Plainfield (a seedy area) of NJ. Three men broke in & tried to hold him up at gunpoint....without a gun (in his possession) he sent 2 to the morgue & one to the hospital.

That guy for years was a teacher in the local high school & now he runs a Karate school..... still he wont teach what the Marines taught him but Uncle Sam might..... you would just need another 4 years ...... your not that old, right!

Nobody's ever been shot at my house. I grew up with loaded guns in the house. My job in the Navy included small arms maintenence. If you keep weapons for self-defense, it makes no sense to lock them in a safe.

He was 20, not 4. I have yet to see a report that said the guns were not secured.

I have a gun safe. I also know that, if they really want to, anyone can get into it. All you can do is slow them down. A safe that uses a key...they will find the key. If it's a combination lock it will take much more time, but they can eventually figure it out.

I feel the same way. I have a gun safe and keep it locked all the time. I don't have a loaded weapon in every room but my trusty snub nosed revolver is always loaded and is never more than an arm's length away no matter which room I happen to be in.

I figure Mr. Crazy isn't going to give me a time out to retrieve a weapon from my locked safe and load it and I ain't gonna give Mr. Crazy the chance to use one of my own weapons against me.
