I agree with Obama. Yes, access to mental health care should be at least as easy as access to a gun and no, regular citizens do not need military assault rifles.
Right to have guns? Definitely. Right to military style assault rifles? Why should it be, anymore than personally owning weapons other weapons capable of mass destruction? http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/19/us/connecticut-school-shooting/index.html?hpt=us_c2

So you agree that we ought to ban the sale of guns that did NOT have anything to do with the attack?

In the past I might have agreed with you however…

…our government and its elected leaders are paralyzed in the face of the downfall of our economy – major social unrest is only a few years away.

When society fails it sure would be handy to know that there are those that pack a weapon of substantial impact – able to guard against a government hostile to the people

While it may seem to some to be an opportune time to bring this gun issue up, a weapon ban will never happen while our leaders dilly-dally their responsibilities and pander to special interest groups.

I will agree with anyone about curtailing the constitutionally guaranteed right of peaceful, law-abiding citizens to bear arms if it can be absolutely guaranteed by Obama, his minions, his puppets, and all bleeding heart liberals that NO GANGBANGER, NO GANGSTA, NO BAD BOY OF ANY KIND, SHAPE, OR FORM, will possess, or use, military grade firearms, or ANY firearm for any matter, and that should there be those that slip in the cracks, the police will be wherever an active shooting is happening WITHIN the minute.

If no guarantee is forthcoming, then every law-abiding, peaceful, non-violent, psychologically certifiably sane citizen has the right to purchase ANY firearm, long or short, within his financial ability, and the right to defend his person, those of his loved ones, his domicile, and the general public from the elements of society that intend to inflict harm on them.

The government has been hostile for quite a while now and the citizens have not done a thing but whine and whimper.

They never will. They will quote the constitution, but the OBLIGATION to rise up against an oppressive government seems oddly left out.

Shoot, I can't get anyone to listen right now and I have a major issue and rock solid proof against government officials. Everyone prefers to believe in the government instead.

Nobody in this country has the guts to stand up to oppression. That would be "too liberal."

Since that won't happen, the next best thing is to let the government do what it can to control people, since they refuse to control themselves or their government.

Face facts. Nobody in this country will do anything to stop the government, so it's time to lay down and go with what they can do to protect us. This nation already freely handed over too many of our rights and freedoms to them. It's vastly unbalanced now, in favor of the government.

    Repeat: NOBODY WILL DO ANYTHING

Every time more of our rights are stripped, a few people warn about the coming unrest. All it sounds like anymore is "blah blah blah." The average citizen in this nation is weak, pathetic, and rolls over when faced with tyranny or redefines it to mean something worse and says "oh, this isn't that bad."

We're at our only solution now, friend. Let the government handle it. American citizens have proven they can't.

I'm in favor of an assault weapons ban, a complete assault weapons ban. This includes not allowing civilians to own magazines that hold more than five or seven rounds.

    However...

We also need parents to start taking responsibility. One of the links nobody is talking about between these mass shootings is the epidemic of violent video games. Most of these games are rated M, which is equivalent to an R rating for movies. Yet most are bought by parents for their teens and children. I'll admit that I have owned and played some in the past. When I would go into online multiplayer the loudest voices would be kids in elementary and middle school. It's crazy.

We have empirical data that as we have allowed more gratuitous violence and gratuitous sex into our media and mainstream entertainment that our country has gotten worse and worse. We are on the edge of losing an entire generation to sex and violence because of our inability to stop ourselves. We have empirical data that were worse off now than before.

Of course, and I've said this before, we also have a deep seated spiritual oppression that is the result. We, Christians, need to be ready to do real spiritual warfare if we are to redeem our nation.

I'd like to see that data. Could you provide some links?

The video game issue is just a distraction. Millions of us play those games and we don't go on murderous rampages. I have not known any kid that did not play soldier or cowboys and indians and the vast majority do not go on murderous rampages.

While I agree that WE played games such as cops and robbers and have never been tempted to kill anyone, please be reminded that we grew up with a respect for human life that kids today do not learn unless they go to church or have parents that teach them about the precious gift of life.

I agree with you but I'd like to see the data. If it's out there I want to know about it as I have two teens that play Uncharted 3.

To borrow an argument, if there were no shoot-em up video games kids would simply find something else--cap pistols, nerf guns, even wooden sticks as pretend guns.

Cain and Abel had no such influence.

I agree that younger generations have no respect for human life. I lay that at the feet of liberals to own.

How familiar are you with the current crop of video games, such as those widely available on XBOX360 and PS3? You can also include PC market but that isn't as large a consumer base in teens and children as these others.

Also, how familiar are you with the online multiplayer functions of the games? Feel free to describe in detail.

This will help us all get on the same page.

FTR, I spent countless hours in college, grad school, and since then playing games. I've played on XBOX, XBOX360, and PC. I even played on the original Nintendo. I'm not going on a murderous rampage soon. I'm not saying that all people who play these games do so.

However, I am saying that there is a link. Notice I didn't call for action on video games but am using them, and the overall media culture, as a point. One of the chief issues in too many teens that grow up into adults is that they have unfettered access to these games and zero, and I mean zero, parental involvement. One of the biggest issues we are seeing with young men, ages 18-28, is their adolescence is extending into their mid-20s. They are receiving college degrees at a substantially lower rate than their female peers. They are, largely, spending their time and effort on gaming, drinking, partying, and have low tolerances to consistently setting and achieving goals. To this end they are a critical age segment that is showing significant signs of a failure to mature and step out on their own. Certainly there are tremendous exceptions and there isn't a hard and fast rule that fits all males in this generation. However, there is a substantial and growing survey of literature that is reflecting the challenges setting themselves before this generation.

It should be telling that the last three mass shooting suspects had substantial interaction with overwhelmingly realistic, gratuitously violent video games. This isn't the root cause, but it did contribute to the issues. (See: http://www.ksdk.com/news/article/352281/3/Forensic-psychiatrist-talks-about-mass-shooting-suspects)

It amazes me that any availability of guns is believed to have influence on mass killings but being subjected to violence through several different media sources has none. Pretty wild.

I am a gamer. We have a Wii and an XBox 360. I grew up with the Nintendo. Now we play mostly family type games on the Wii, and that was its original intent. Now with the new system they are branching out into more rated M type games. For the XBox we play Call of Duty (we have most of them) and Assassins Creed (we have 3 of them) and Halo (we have most of them). We use the parental controls to limit gore and language. My sons and I play together against bots. Modern Warfare III's survival mode is a favorite.

We aren't as hardcore as a lot of people. Although we did go to the midnight release of Black Ops II.

My older boys played 6 man football in high school. We hunt. They climb trees, wrestle, have nerf wars, and make weapons out of wrapping paper tubes, sticks, and whatever they can find. They are also some of the most compassionate and community minded young men I know.

Violence is not a result of TV, games, or the availability of guns. It is a result of human choices and a lack of values. This is the result of post modern thought where objective truth is rejected.

I have yet to hear about anyone being killed with a virtual AK-47 from Black Ops II.
