My buddy posted a video of their church baptizing people. They stood up by the pastor, and then they just "ducked down" into the water THREE times. They just stooped down, stood up, stooped down again, three separate times. I've never seen anyone baptized this way. It was weird. Someone explain that to me.

It is how some early Christians baptized. You are immersed one time for each member of the Trinity. Though it is rare to see it these days, it was a common practice from about 150-450. (Cf Everett Ferguson's Baptism in the Early Church.)

The Church of the Brethren used to practice this- they may still- it was called 'triune baptism'.

The triple-plunge is properly called "trine immersion." A Google search will turn up some interesting writings on both sides of the issue.

Trine advocates cite a couple of things as rationale. One, the Trinity--one dip each for the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Another argument is that trine demonstrates the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.

Single-dippers argue that even if the symbol is death, burial and resurrection, Jesus died only once, was buried only once, and was resurrected only once.

There's an argument to be made for either method.

Tom, No, no, no, no!!! Now we will have all kinds of arguments over this. You know, I'm correct you are wrong or the other way through your eyes.

The earlier posters on this are correct...(all of them, no matter what they said...)

Brethren and Grace Brethren Churches practice Baptism this way...They are very similar to Baptists except for 2 thing: (1) Triune Immersion, & (2) They practice foot washing.

My college Roommate ended up as the music Pastor at a Grace Brethren Church, so he has answered my questions about them.

I have never seen that either, but the Trinity does come to mind. My pastor that baptized me would have had a tough time with me. I was 6'3", 210 pounds and he was 5'4", 125 pounds. Plus I had on a flannel shirt and blue jeans, which got water logged as you can imagine. He did get my back up one time, though. :)

Thanks for the link. You learn something new everyday.
