You will have to forgive me. I do not see how your reply is a response to an article that I posted simply as an interesting article giving a bit of insight into the thinking of one group of American voters.

Interesting article CTB. The woman in the article is like many people...good, decent human beings who love their family and their country, but have never been challenged by other views, as their entire life revolves around like-minded people in their church and community. People who get their views reinforced by the likes of Fox News Channel, Beck, Rush, et. al. People who live a sheltered life, in that they never have really tried to understand, or even been exposed to, how others see life in America.

I completely agree with you on this. I am very thankful for the good Christians I have met here at the seminary in Prague who come from many countries and cultures. They have broadened my view on a number of issues. There are many who live sheltered lives and do not meet others with ideas other than their own. There is a feeling of security in such a life. There is comfort in this life. However being sheltered does not man a person has to be or to remain narrow in their outlook.

I believe it is imperative to read widely, to watch or listen to all sides of an issue. There are some who are out on the fringe, right and left, who can be discounted. But it is important to hear what they are saying. Occasionally I will check the English language newspaper from Yemen. What I find interesting is not their articles on foreign affairs, but on the domestic affairs of that country. I have been, on more than one occasion, surprised at their editorials and how critical they are of their government. I was surprised as this as we in the West are not led to believe there is any tolerance of criticism in the Arab countries.

I looked around chapel this morning and saw that there were Christians there from Albania, Canada, England, the Ukraine, Nigeria, Lithuania, Estonia, the Czech Republic, the USA, Russia, and Serbia. Is this not a view of what heaven will look like, with folks from all around the world and with differing view on various issues, especially culturally and politically to say nothing of theological differences. What is common among them, they all have surrendered their lives to Christ and follow him where he leads.

Thanks for a very insightful and honest post. Nothing I can add to that one.

No, brother, you didn't. Don't treat us as obtuse. It's insulting.

And what you claim is your purpose in posting "food for thought" highly violates your regular shtick - your shtick that never seems to vary.

The overwhelming majority of your posts are bringing articles or your opinion here that you feel go against what you perceive as the majority here - with purpose to insult. You do it very benignly and always claim innocence - just like you are doing now.

I'm just asking you - from one Christian to another Christian - if you cannot come here in this thread and admit that the large part of your reasoning for posting an article that claims that people who voted against Obama are ignorant religious buffoons who cannot see the "outside world" was to bring insult and discord...

...if you cannot admit that, then you are not the man I thought you were.

I've done the same thing over the past 12 years - ashamedly so. Posted a snide comment or two wrapped in a soft voice and feigned innocence when called on it. Everybody does.

All I'm asking you to do is admit it. You see, there's not a person on the board who believes that you were merely bringing us some food for thought.

The only thing of value in the article- the writer calls Obama "the straightest-shooter to occupy the White House since Jimmy Carter".

Oh, please! What color is the sky on your planet? :BangHead:

So because I didn't vote for Obama, I have never had my views challenged and my entire life revolves around like-minded people? I live in the deeeeeeep south and there are more people in my circle whose are not as like-minded as me than you can shake a stick at. People in my own family who voted for Obama, people at my job, and a few at my church.

So because I didn't vote for Obama, I am sheltered? Sheltered from what may I ask?

So because I didn't vote for Obama, I never been exposed to others unlike me across America, never tried to understand them, never tried to "see" them?

My mother and I and a few other ladies whom you would classify as "sheltered and unexposed" to those unlike ourselves take care of a couple of illegal families that are without fathers. I'm not going into the details. We don't them going back and we do all we can to make sure they have money, under-the-table jobs, and friendship. The mothers don't speak English. It doesn't matter.

I could go on with much more of how enlightened my conservative people are, but it won't matter.

People who ignorantly are unexposed to people like me and who don't try to understand those who vote like me and who are sheltered from people like me already - and I must say quite sadly - don't give a crap about why people like me vote the way we do.

Their opinions are already blindly made up.

Just ask Lou Giglio about how liberals do not like their views challenged and what their response is when that happens. The response is Evangelical Christians are no longer welcome to the Whitehouse.

This liberal garbage that you are all so open and tolerant is an elitist lie.

Actually most of my posts since the election are exactly for that reason. I can not be held for the misinterpretation of others.

Are posts on the other side, in the area of politics and news, posted to insult? Is that the real reason people post anti-Obama posts and begin anti-Obama threads ... to insult others on the board?

Frankly I feel the woman in the article shows intelligence and a growing understanding. Will she change her views? I doubt she will, but she will gain a better and deeper understanding as well as better thought out reasons as to why she believes what she does.

There is nothing wrong in being ignorant. There is something wrong in remaining ignorant. Ignorant simply means does not know, but is able to learn. All of us are ignorant in many ways, I included.

Their interpretation is not my responsibility. I have no control over others interpretations. Why not approach this and future news articles as "food for thought" so we can have a rational discussion rather than an emotional response that ultimately does not create any discussion?

I see nothing insulting in the article. People were convinced that Obama could never win and were shocked when he won. Even Rove was totally convinced and ended up looking rather uninformed and blind when he said the Republicans would win in Ohio even after it was announced that Ohio was lost.

It should be an interesting area to study as to why they were so convinced and so wrong. Would you like to start a thread on this topic?

Everything you have described about yourself - having friends and acquaintances from around the world, being exposed to other cultures, reading English versions of other nations' newspapers, having been enlightened by other peoples, carefully weighing all views of an issue,.....

......these things describe so many conservative people that I know.

I'm surprised that you are not enlightened about us. We aren't who you think we are.

And despite our own enlighenment and our participating in the same things that you say that YOU do to become less "sheltered" ...... we STILL didn't vote for President Obama.

That's something you should ponder on, brother.

Another dishonest post by CTB. What a surprise.

Your post confirms only 2 things.

Republicans, in general, have accepted the results of the election, but consider it a call to action. So your source's basic premise is a lie.

What it actually confirms is that liberals can't stand opposition and typically demonize those that don't fall in line. This is just more of the same.

It pretty much tells us the author is out of touch with reality and a total lapdog for the Liberal agenda.

It figures that CTB, MP and certain others would lap it up.

But, therein lies the rub ..... in your own words.

If someone posts an anti-Obama thread, such as one recently posted this morning about his violent speech about his "enemies" - then that post is NOT insulting those who voted for him. The poster of that thread, like the rest of us at this point, doesn't care who voted for him - that poster was educating people on what he felt were the highly inappropriate things the president has said.

YOUR article was directly slamming those who voted against him. Slamming those here on this board.

Ah, the VERY reason why you should be very careful when posting articles claiming conservatives to be ignorant religious close-minded idiots. You may have no control over people's interpretation of what you post, but - and you won't admit this either - in posting an article like this, you could not possibly be ignorant of how many would take it. Ergo.............

.......why not begin with this disclaimer?

And I have been discussing. This is now my 4th post trying to explain to that conservative people who did not vote for President Obama, are NOT what this article painted us as. I've cited several examples.

And, yes, I got emotional about your article. And I don't apologize for it.

Probably the same reason that Democrats were so convinced and so wrong that George Bush won twice and were shocked BOTH times. I voted for George Bush both times and NEVER, NEVER thought about rubbing my liberal friends face in it - even when I had to endure 8 years of them bashing George Bush and the Republican Party. We could never have a discussion without voices being raised. I just don't know why liberals who hated Bush with all their might and verbally abused him for 8 years across the media and in people's living rooms, can't understand why conservatives feel led to point out President Obama's wrong actions.

I guess it's the old "they can dish it out but they can't take it" thing.

No, I do not want to start a thread on why converatives did not vote for President Obama and were shocked when we went back in.

I have moved on from the election. He will be president until 2016. It is my duty to pray him and his family AND to call him on his actions when his actions are wrong.

He is my president, but he is not infallible and he is not above scrutiny.
