Now States Cutting Employee Hours to Avoid Obamacare Costs

The costs of Obamacare are not just hitting businesses this year--they are also hitting the government, and public employees as well. Virginia, for example, is about to limit part-time employees to 29 hours per week in order to avoid triggering Obamacare’s requirement that employers provide health insurance to those working 30 hours per week or more. The state cannot afford the $110 million annual cost of insurance.

Carpro, if this quarter is as bad as last quarter, aren't we in a recession?

I think that the cutbacks on hours are all over the society and from the top to the bottom. It will only get worse as the law kicks in fully, won't it? It's on the internet that the government as a cost-saving mechanism is going to turn off the light at the end of the tunnel.

Actually we haven't been out of a recession since it started under Bush, Now it is simply the Obama Depression with ~14 million unemployed and an additional 10 million underemployed.

Agreed that it has been years since we had prosperity, but the government has a tricky definition of 2 quarters in a row with no growth or with setbacks before they declare it a recession.

A lot of this can be blamed on environmentalists who do not want drilling for oil on federal lands west of the Mississippi River. They say this country is low on oil but no one knows for sure because all of the oil is out West and all of the dipsticks are in Washington DC.

To some of us, it was entirely predictable. Part of the obama plan to deliberately cripple and destroy our nation.

Wal Mart has been practicing the art of giving their employees part time hours----and paying them minimum wages---a multi BILLION dollar industry!!!! And they can't do any better for their cashiers!!

And the good news tonight: Obama will spend another $6-$7 trillion dollars we don't have and all the Obama lovers, including those on this Board, will wildly applaud or applaud wildly, whichever!

Think about it. Let's say there is forty hours of work to be had for one full-time position. If it is cut to a part-time twenty hour job and another similar one added, there are now two people employed. We are now on the road to full employment.

Now there needs to be an executive order prohibiting people from holding two jobs...

Decades ago, the mines in Southern Africa rigged things such that all their workers were pretty much day laborers, or migrants. None had "real" jobs.
The effects on the family were grim.

    Minimum wage = minimum notice.

Want a better job - than stand up to the challenge

(note: it also takes a lot of work)

unrestricted capitalism would bring about child labor, the termination of female workers who become pregnant (GE only stopped this because a judge told them to stop. GE was being very anti-family!) etc.

    Really?

    What, exactly, is "unrestricted capitalism"?
