Thousands of protestors massed at the Washington Monument to implore President Obama to veto the Keystone Pipeline project and to call for more steps in figthing emissions of greenhouse gases. Buried in the story was this tidbit:

    From the NY Times:
Groups opposing coal production, fracking for natural gas and nuclear power were prominent; separate groups of Baptists and Catholics, as well as an interfaith coalition, and groups from Colorado, Toronto and Minneapolis joined the throng.

Anybody know what would cause Baptists to join this protest?

Yes, both environmental and economic concerns.

OK, I get the environmental angle, but economic? What, they are for decreased economic activity?

I'm not sure I get the environmental concerns. Fracking, for example; if you watch the Matt Damon movie, you come away thinking that fracking will cause your water to become explosive. What they don't tell you is that that area has always had an abnormal build-up of methane gas, and residents were able to "light" their water before the fracking started.

Statement by the Nat'l Assoc. of Evangelicals

We pledge our cooperation to any responsible effort to solve critical environmental problems, and our willingness to support all proven solutions developed by competent authorities. We call upon our constituency to do the same, even at the cost of personal discomfort or inconvenience.

The problem with environmental concerns is they are almost always exaggerated or completely made up. Much like global warming.

So what environmental concerns does Keystone raise?

Baptists are a wide varied group so it is probable that some where there. But I don't know if any baptist group has taken a formal stand on this issue so they would only be speaking for themselves.

Cracks me up that on this board many think of the CBF as extremely liberal. Really need to get out more.

Like politics, so many listen to what sounds good to them without checking on the agenda of the one(s) behind the earthly curtain. -- Money, power, control

Where will all these "environmental" protestors be when God rains down fire and brimstone on "Mother Earth"?

If you buy into the idea that carbon emissions create greenhouse gasses that are causing climate change the construction of this pipeline and subsequent extraction of the oil would increase that activity.

There is also the (remote) possibility that an oil spill in Nebraska could endanger the water table which contains a aquafier that is used to irrigate millions of acres of farmland in the midwest.

FYI, I support the building of the Keystone pipeline.

I was pretty sure you did. Thanks for helping point out the flimsiness of the foundation for the protests mentioned in the OP.

Same thing that causes them to support the most rabid abortionist to ever inhabit the White House, the most successful Marxist ever to ever inhabit the White House, and the most accomplished liar to ever inhabit the White House, Barak Hussein Obama! So perhaps Crabtownboy and a few others can provide the answer!
