Bloomberg Strikes Again: NYC Bans Food Donations To The Homeless

In the late 1980s donations of food from receptions and banquets was banned from rescue missions here in Indy. In the past, surplus food from country clubs and downtown dinner clubs and fine restaurants was often donated to missions. Then, food that had been cooked--or even sliced ham or beef--could no longer be donated. Missions ended up buying food from wholesalers just as restaurants do in gallon cans and in frozen boxes. Some missions still get day-old bread and baked goods from grocery stores.

Alcoholics who go into treatment programs sometimes get poor relief from township governments and if they have food stamps, the food stamps can be assigned to the mission. Most missions take government money and therefore can no longer force transients to listen to sermons so no one gets saved in missions anymore, as most churches cannot afford to run a mission on their own. In the old days, transients attended a service, ate a meal, took a shower and went to sleep. It was called soup, soap and Salvation.
