    Much will be written about Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-KY) filibuster. It may be viewed through the prism of history as a turning point. It may be quickly forgotten as subsequent events diminish its relevance. Before Wednesday, however, Paul spoke for a narrow slice of the Republican Party’s coalition. Today, he speaks for a reinvigorated GOP base. But as the hours wore on, another phenomenon began to take shape – Paul’s ultimately unsuccessful efforts to rein in the president spoke directly to the forgotten millions of Americans wary of the ever-expanding scope of the unconstrained global war on terror. Paul offered himself up as something of a martyr. His voice, once lonely, grew in stature as his Republican colleagues – one after the next – shared his demand for redress from the White House, though all knew that would not be forthcoming. It was poetic. It was romantic. What may be most important, it reframed Congressional Republicans. All of the sudden, they were fighting for a cause with self-evident nobility that requires no public education campaign: life, liberty, and due process. In filibustering, Paul chipped away at the monopoly on romance that the left has enjoyed for more than a century.

    Quite an overstatement. Even the conservative Washington Times reports on how unpopular Paul's filibuster was with some Republicans.

    IMHO, it's those particular Republicans who were critical of the filibuster that are dragging the GOP down. If the GOP had more 'Rand Pauls' and less neocons like the 'McCains'/'Grahams' of the party, I might consider voting Republican again.

    While Paul's filibuster was ongoing, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) -- who had joined the filibuster in its third hour -- called out Senate Democrats for their absence.
    "I agree that one of the saddest things we've seen during the eight hours that Rand Paul has been filibustering is the crickets chirping from the other side of the aisle, with the exception of Ron Wyden and I appreciate his coming down," Cruz said Wednesday on conservative pundit Mark Levin's radio show. "But with that exception, where were the Democrats? How can they not be every bit as outraged as all of the rest of us are?"
    Wyden has been the most outspoken Democratic critic of President Barack Obama's drone program and the secrecy that surrounds it. He was the first Democrat to join the filibuster, taking the Senate floor just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday. He expressed support for Brennan's nomination, but said that he welcomed the opportunity to discuss key questions surrounding Obama's drone policy.
    "I want it understood that I have great respect for this effort to really ask these kinds of questions,” Wyden said. "And Senator Paul has certainly been digging into these issues in great detail."
    Wyden, a senior member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, has advocated for more transparency from Obama's Justice Department on targeted drone strikes. Last month, he pressed the Justice Department to answer more questions about the program.....
