It is interesting to me how many old people on this board and in our culture talk about loving things they call "old"

    They love the "old hymns".

They love the "old mourner's bench."

They love old timey "camp meetings"

They say they are still standing for the old faith which consists of the Book (by which SOME, not all, of them mena the KJV), the blood (by which many of them mean divine blood- a new doctrine) and the blessed hope ( by which most of them mean the rapture.)

It is REMARKABLE how they THINK these things are old.

And all the while we have in this youngest adult generation a revival of love for TRULY old things.

Old people today are largely the ones who perpetuate new stuff and the youngest people are the ones who want us to return to the truly old stuff.

Because by "old hymns" old people mean "I'd Rather Have Jesus," written a few decades a ago!! Remarkable!!

By "The Book" many of the refer to the KJVO or KJVP doctrine which is hardly one hundreds years OLD!! Amazing!

By "Blessed Hope" they mean the RAPTURE which is a brand new doctrine so far as Church History is concerned. Though Darby basically invented it in 1830 it was Scofield, not long dead, and Pentecostals and TBN, both very new movements which made it mainstream.

The "Old Mourner's Bench" speaks of the altar which, though a few utilized before Finny, a very few, Finney made it mainstream just over 100 years ago!!

Older folks, its time to pass the torch, don't you think- especially if you really are the ones who perpetuate all this new stuff and do not know any better than to think that IT is the old stuff.

Disclaimer: not all old people fit this bill. So I am not speaking to them. But MANY MANY do. I am speaking to them.

While I like some of those "old" songs myself and I am KJP (though by no means is that a test of orthodoxy let alone salvation) I totally agree. Many have no idea what historic Christian doctrine really is.

    I'm 24 BTW

    I agree.

BTW, I prefer the King James version. I don't see it as a doctrine. I don't think that other versions are terribly flawed. I use other versions as well. But I ALWAYS preach from the King James version.

And I, since I was saved at 14, grew up on Gaither Homecoming music and The Cathedrals and Gold City.

There are good songs in the midst of that stuff.

My point is that many old folks speak a bit pompously about the superiority of the "old hymns of the faith" over new music that kids in church listen to today, and they don't know any more about "old hymns" than the kids they criticize. They, it seems to me, quite ARROGANTLY judge old by THEMSELVES. They seem to think they lived in the early days of the church or at least think that their day was superior. I would argue that it was by and large inferior. It was marked by shallowness and emotionalism. It was on one hand within academia the bearer of the most rapid expansion of liberalism this nation has ever known and on the other hand, in country churches, the bearer of the most isolationist, backwards, shallowness and man-centerdness in history (barring perhaps Finneyism).

Yet, ironically, there is a revival of love for the truly old hymns among, not old people, but young people today.

Hymns like "Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise" and "Be Thou My Vision" and "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" etc...

Truth. I left an IFB church last year (left the entire 'movement' actually) and that was a common saying. "I'm not changing from the old ways!" "Stay on the old paths!" I got sick of it. A friend of mine on FB who is still in the church posts just about every week how he's an "old fashioned IFB" apparently he fails to realize IFB has only existed for less than 100 years...

Any who think that hymns written by Gaither. like Because He Lives, are old hymns of the faith.

And I think I was clear that I recognize that there are a few old Christians who rise above this generational error.

    I commend them.

    But by and large....

    well, you get the idea.

I suggest you leave them be.... if they are too old & set in their ways, leave them to eventually die in their dead churches till the next generation takes over. Its not a condemnation but the lord did say to let the dead bury the dead.

Here's an example of just what you're talking about: a recording by Twit of Reformed University Fellowship being gushed over:

    http://www.heartsandmindsbooks.com/booknotes/indelible_grace_v_wake_thy_slu/

    Fanny Crosby?

    An old song?

    As if!

    We know better.

I don't know what you are trying to say here.

Are you trying to say Fanny Crosby IS old?

Are you trying to say that I am saying Fanny Crosby is old? Because I am saying the opposite.

So I really don't know what your point is.

I don't care if it is old or new. I do like the King James. It is a good version. The language of it is hard to beat.

I am simply pointing out that there are so many old folks today who think hymns written between, say, 1900-1950, are superior to the music kids listen to because they are "the old hymns of THE faith."

I am trying to point out how narrow minded and ill-informed such a notion is.

    My experience to a tee.

My wife has an uncle who was a mover and shaker in the Free Will Baptist movement that I came out of. He says the same kind of dumb mess all of the time.

That movement was practically IDENTICAL to the IFB types you are talking about.

King James Only- most of them.

    Southern Gospel is superior.

Camp meetings are where its at.

    White dress shirts.

    Standards, standards, standards.

And, like what I am going to say here or not- they were stupid. That's what they are. They are dumb. Plain and simple. They could not last two rounds in a debate with anyone better than a half-wit concerning the things they hold so dear.

They scream and hollar about the OLD PATHS and rant and rave about how they are STILL STANDING but they wouldn't know something in the church that was truly old if it bit them on the rear. They really wouldn't.

And I am very convinced that these types do ten times the harm to the Kingdom than the good they might do on occasion.

Agreed. Though I would use ignorant instead of dumb. Many are actually quite capable intellectually but they are shut in and unable to grow.

And in the IFB i left it was bus routes instead of camp meeting :BangHead:

Yes, they are shut in so why don't they shut up?

In other words they speak from their pulpits with the authority of a rogue scholar and they have to know that they have studied so little outside their little circles that they have NO justifiable cause to speak with such authority.

Does that not make them, not just ignorant, but arrogant to the point of great wickedness?

Many are incredibly arrogant. Thee was immense amounts of pride in the pastors at the IFB churches I've been in. But I am hopeful that it isn't the whole group. However I also haven't sen any evidence to the contrary. But we still must pray for them and love them. Those who are saved are still brothers, those who aren't need the gospel presented in love.

Perhaps. But there are still enough of them to kill Christianity in this nation before they die off.

They are going down and dragging us into the abyss with them.
