Many debate the spiritual significance of Christ breathing on the disciples and announcing their reception of the Holy Spirit. God’s breath formed a living organism called Adam, and Christ’s breath initiated a new and living organism on earth called the church. Some say the Birth of the church did not happen until the day of Pentecost.

Could it be that conception happen when Christ breathed on the disciples and the birth happened on the Day of Pentecost?

    Thoughts:
It takes 40 weeks for a normal conception to end in a healthy birth. Jesus walked on earth for 40 days after His resurrection.

Christ took his new resurrected body to heaven…but he left spiritual body on earth-the church!

A spirit without a body is dead. A congregation without the Spirit is dead.

I believe that conception started when Christ breathed on the 10 disciples in John and the church was manifested/birthed at Pentecost.

WHen the HOly Spirit came on the Day of Pentecost..He came as a mighty rushing wind or the breath of God! All believers were filled with the Spirit and began to "speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." (Acts 2:4).

What was the purpose for speaking with tongues?

A sign to the first century Jews, as it has always been (1Cor.14:21).
No first century Jews; no tongues. They have ceased.

I like to let scriptures and patterns formed in the OT to answer that question.
We are told by Paul that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit dwells within us, right? In the OT the tabernacle of Moses and the temple were settings in which inspired rituals were set aside for the purpose of appeasing God and drawing men closer to God.

God spoke from the door, the holy place and he communed with the high priest from above the ark of the covenant, called the mercy seat. In every case it was at or in the tabernacle itself. We are that temple today! THe Holy Spirit now speaks from within our spirit man, which is figuratively the holy of holies. We are body, soul and spirit. In the temple the door represents our body..the holy place is inside the door, representing our soul/mind...and the the mercy seat on the ark is the door to our spirit, this is where the Holy Spirit dwells and speaks to us as we walk in covenant and mercy of God!

To fulfill the OT prophecies concerning that event in Joel/Isaiah and other prophets, and to bear witness to the truth of jesus was the messiah of isreal!

Same reason all the other gifts/operations of His happened back then, not needed now!

Scripture does not teach that it was the only purpose of tongues.

ONce the Spirit entered or filled the believers that day, they began to "speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance," or we sould say they heard the words the Spirit was speaking to them and began to verbalize them by speaking out loud with their voices.

In John 3:8, when Jesus said you will hear the sound, He was revealing that the Spirit would bring a language that you would hear and speak. This interpretation of John 3:8 is also evident when Christ precdicted that believers would "speak with new tongues" (Mark 16).

The Bible uses the phrases "new tongues" "cloven tongues like as of fire" "speak with tongues" "divers kinds of tongues", and tongues of men and of angels". Tongues means languages not know to the speaker but imparted by the Holy Spirit. The NT records where the Spirit baptized believers and they all spoke with tongues.

    Keep to the OP awaken.
That was the ONLY purpose on the Day of Pentecost.
3,000 of the approximately 100,000 Jews present on that day trusted Christ.
The rest rejected Him; they rejected that sign, a sign of judgment. And soon after judgment came.

The breath of God imparted life in the Bible to the first man, Adam, and he became a living soul.

God provided Adam three distinct blessings that he lost. Christ gained them back for us!

Jesus was the first to announce that God was preparing to send the breath of God to those who ask (Luke 11:13) and that believers would "speak with new tongues" (Mark 16). These new tongues are a prayer language that enables the spirit of the believer to speak directly to God.

We are a triparite being..the blood flows through the body not the spirit. Take the blood out of the body and it dies. THe soul is linked to the brain, the mind, the emotions and the five senses that bring information and can read the feeling of pain and grow in knowledge. The human spirit is actually the eternal breath of God and has a life force linked with the soul.

Our body has the ability to speak using a voice box and vocal cords, and our spirit also has a voice of its own that uses the same avenue of speaking. Interesting note..
The beggar and the rich man were able to speak after death. (Luke 16)
Elijah and Moses spoke with Christ at the Mount of Transfiguration. THis indicates that the spirit can speak outside the human body. THis is why Paul wrote that when he spoke in tongues, his spirit was praying (1 Cor. 14)

THe breath of God is powerful!!

But that is not when the Holy Spirit came is it? Perhaps it was symbolic or even prophetic of what was to come. But Christ doesn't lie The Holy Spirit would come on the Day of Pentecost.
    Why the command?
Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

    And here:
Acts 1:4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
--Jesus had told them to wait in Jerusalem for the filling of the Holy Spirit; for the coming of the Holy Spirit.
It was both. The sign authenticated the message of the apostles, that the message was of God. The accusation was that they were drunk. The sign told them that this was from God. They knew better than to make wild accusations. Upon rejecting the sign the rejected the message and also Christ. It is all one package.

The Holy Spirit was in the beginning! He was poured out to empower the church the Day of Pentecost and is still here today for that same purpose! Take Him out of your little box! He is bigger and His purpose is far greater than you give Him credit for!

My native language is English. So, this is the language of my physical body. There is a language of the human soul..Paul writes of this when he says "groanings which cannot be uttered"...I have witnessed this when a person is overwhelmed through grief, sorrow, loss etc.

The third language is that of the human spirit, which is the language of speaking in other tongues (language of the Holy Spirit). When I pray with my Engleis language, I am praying with my understanding. When I cannot articulate the words and am under a heavy burden, the groaning is the travail of my soul. When I pray in spirit it is the language of the Holy Spirit directly to God, but my understanding is unfruitful.

The breath of God speaks to our spirit!

Some say it is a waste of time and energy to pray in a language that bypasses the human understanding. But God says that our spirit is praying to God when we speak in tongues and that when we pray in other tongues we are speaking mysteries. He teaches that it edifies us. Edify refers to a building a house...so we are building our spiritual house. Jude also says that we are to build ourselves up on our most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. Our body is the temple/house of the Holy Spirit!

WHen the Holy Spirit fills a person's spirit, He gives the spirit a supernatural language to communicate directly with God. It is a pure form of communication-spirit to Spirit.

Another purpose of tongues is to reveal the secrets of men's hearts. Someone gives a message in tongues and someone of that dialect understands it.

Christ speaks through his written word. The Father speaks to us through the inward voice. THe Holy Spirit can and does speak to us using the prayer language of the Holy Spirit.

The breath of God is awesome and leads us to all truth!

Yes, the Holy Spirit always has been. He is the third person of the triune Godhead, the trinity. He was there at creation:

Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Perhaps he is greater than you give him credit for. Do you bottle him up, mix him with some "miracle water" like Peter Popov does, that a miracle might occur every time you use it? Typical of the Charismatic movement.

This is not true. Don't you even take time to think these things through before you post them?
    Think again:

    "groanings which cannot be uttered."
They cannot be uttered! not by you, or anyone else on this earth.
It is impossible to UTTER these groanings, and thus impossible to witness them.
It is the Holy Spirit that utters groanings, not man. And there is nothing in the Scripture that says He makes it audible to human ears, or that he uses man's vocal organs in doing so. He doesn't. They cannot be uttered. Why is that so hard to understand. Something that cannot be verbalized, said, groaned, uttered, etc., cannot be made by a human and therefore not be witnessed. You cannot do it. Only God can.

Some of you have more patience and time than I do. I just cannot respond to this stuff anymore. Maybe it's because of my in-depth encounter with the Charismatic/Pentecostal movement during my studies. I was just very much put off by the whole spectacle.

All I can do is share what God has taught me! I can not make you believe it! It has not ceased and is very powerful in the life of a believer!

    Now that's a real cop-out.
    God doesn't teach contradictions.
God doesn't teach things that don't make sense.
God doesn't teach things that are impossibilities.

When the Bible says something is an impossibility then why infer that God is lying and say that you can do something that God says you cannot do. This is the absurd height of arrogance, and you may as well spit in his face. It is defiance against God.
God said, "It is the Holy Spirit that makes groanings which cannot be uttered."
You said, "It is ME that makes groanings which cannot be uttered.

    Look at the implications here.
You have made a claim to deity.
You have made a claim to do something that is impossible to do.
Why would you ever do something that borders on blasphemy.
Perhaps you should think of this sin as very close to blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, though personally I don't think it is. It is very serious however.
