I am under the impression that there are some on this BB who do not believe that two people can be friends if they disagree with each other.

From personal experience I know this is not true.

I just finished reading Paul Tillich's "My Travel Diary: 1936 Between Two Worlds".

Paul Tillich and Karl Barth did not agree with each other's man's theology and yet they were friends. Here is a quote from pp 117-118 of the book.

I think you're full of your own pre-concieved impressions, and ignore what people say.

I do not have a single friend who I agree with 100%, and some of my best friends are ill-informed, hyper liberal. knee-jerk reactionaries. Yet somehow we manage to talk without accusing the other of hatred, or wanting their wife to die, or not caring enough.

Can you be friends with someone you think hates, for any reason ? I don't think I would want to.

Of course I can. I have high school classmates who I have been friends with for over 50 years who fit that mold you mentioned. They simply hate everyone they have not met, but like the folk they have met and have gotten to know. You gotta realize these are mountain folk. I don't know if you are familiar with Southern Highlanders or not.

Can you be friends with some one you have called "the enemy"?

My friendships stop at the chapel door. This is a ministry. There are friends of mine I would not want as voting members of my church. They would be an enemy.

But if you are somehow asking if I could be friends with you, then no. To accuse me of hate time and time again has worn out any endearing feelings I could possibly ever muster for you.

I feel Dietrich Bonhoeffer answered your post years ago.

As I told you in another post, in another thread:

    "PHYSICIAN, HEAL THYSELF!"

(And in answer to your anticipated response, this IS on topic, as you are the one who raised this specific line of thought!!!):thumbs::thumbs:

Do you agree with me that people who do not agree with each other can still be friends? That is the question.

What am I to heal. I have said that I have friends with whom I disagree and they disagree with me. I could be friends with Bro. Curtis even thought we do not agree. It is his decision that he can not be friends with me. It would be a very boring world if my friends and I always agreed.

Oh, and no you are not on topic with your reply as you did not comment on whether people can disagree and still be friends.

You have accused me of waging a war on women.
You have accused me of HATING the poor.
You have told me I trust guns more than I do God.
You have told me I don't understand big words.
You have told me I want my wife to die of the operating room floor.

You don't want to be friends. You want to be the victim. Curtis' victim. You are a joke, even in this forum.

Perhaps Bonhoeffer planned on "loving" Hitler to death ?

Of course you can. Sometimes the best friend one can have is the one who realizes that the other is right when they let the other know they're in need of a gentle pat upside the head with a cast iron skillet.

The last person I want at my side at the toughest of times is someone who is afraid to disagree with me on important topics. Whether it's our spiritual or physical lives, we need people with differing opinions and points of view to survive and keep things straight, sometimes those differences make the difference between life or death.
