There is another thread on this forum where the name Lucifer is noticed in an Easter Vigil prayer called the Exsultet.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exsultet

And of course that topic gets a lot of discussion on that thread.

But there is yet another more modern connection. The Vatican has an astronomy group/dept/ that is essentially run by Jesuits (apparently they are considered the intelligentsia in the Catholic Church).

They have two observatories. One old observatory outside of the Vatican city - (apparently it used to be fairly dark there).

The other in Arizona. The one in Arizona is an optical binocular named L.U.C.I.F.E.R by the manufacturer.

One in Arizona is run by the Vatican.

    Here is an interesting article

So why did the manufacturer decide to name the instrument "Lucifer"?

    Interesting? Coincidence? Providence?

    in Christ,

    Bob

Those pesky Jesuits hiding closets, and under the bed. Gotta watch out for them!

I don't know anything about the telescope or instrument. But you are right the Vatican does indeed run an observatory at the Vatican and also jointly works at an observatory in Arizona. There is a section devoted to science. And in fact the Big Bang theory was first postulated by a Jesuit. Which in Catholic view God created the universe Ex Nihilio which means out of nothing. So the Jesuit based on that belief postulated the big bang theory which moved against an accepted view at the time called the Steady State Theory which held the universe was always there. However, because at the basis of the big bang theory there must have been a God which caused it Hawkins recently gave a seminar trying to explain how the big bang happened without God using M theory as his base (string theory) Again trying to move science back from the view of the Universe being created Ex Nihilio to always having been there in some form as "string membranes" from multi-verses occasionally collide.

Good point. In fact the "Big Bang" was a derogatory term that scientists supporting the steady-state alternative used to intimidate the scientists that thought all matter had a beginning. They were trying to hint that the alternative to steady-state was Genesis 1:1 and that no self-respecting scientist should want to affirm something in the Bible.

However that aside - their telescopes are in fact LUCIFER 1 and LUCIFER 2 in case of Arizona.

    in Christ,

    Bob
