The differential lables between Expository and Topical is a misnomer. Topical sermons can be preached in an expository manner.

    So...

Is it necessary to preach through a section of the Bible, or is it permissible to announce..."I'm going to preach on money...and we are going to look at 5 passages that speak about money."

    Both are good practices.

But you should not do the latter to the exclusion of the former.

The former is superior to the latter, but it is not EXCLUSIVE to the latter.

Consider that God did not give us his word one topic at a time, but rather one book at a time.

The best way is to preach through books. But that is not, and SHOULD NOT be the only way.

There is a best way to shoot a three pointer. It should be the preferred method. But it should not be the ONLY way you ever shoot a three pointer.

Some circumstances call for you to supplement the best way with other ways.

If you are going to preach on the Trinity, it is best to address the topic through numerous passages.

But the regular feeding of the flock requires systematic preaching through books of the bible.

Topical sermons can be preached in an expository manner, tis true, Rev.

But the late, great Dr. Stephen Olford was asked what he would do if he caught himself preaching a topical sermon

    His answer??

    Repent of it-----immediately, Lad!!

Ahhh yes The holy grail of expository preaching......the text demands the approach. Expository preaching is often another phrase for boring preaching and topical preaching another term for ignore text make whatever point you want. Either way, forced approach is bad preaching.

    You're right.

A lot of expository preaching is boring.

That is a crying shame and a sin... because the Word of God is NOT boring and the preacher should not delivering in that manner.
