Graduation at SU

    Graduation at Syracuse University will be held at 930 AM on 12 May - which is a SUNDAY!

    If you were a student at SU, would you skip church to attend commencment?

    I would like to know if SU consulted with Hendricks Chapel about having graduation on Sunday.

    Thoughts?

    I'm not saying its a sin, but as liberal as SU is and demanding all be accommodating and accepting, you would think that they would consider the needs of the Christian community, especially since it was founded by Methodists.
    (or maybe that is the only group they discriminate against)

    Attendance at church isn't a barometer of one's sin or sanctification.

    If I were graduating from SU I'd merrily attend my service regardless of day or time.

    When I'm on vacation, away from the church where I serve I often take off a Sunday. I think one of the holiest things some people could do is take a Sunday off.

    I just recieved this email from a friend of mine who is with a Baptist ministry at SU:

    As long as I remember graduation at SU has been on Sunday, almost always on Mother's Day. I am not sure how long it has been that way. The convocations for the individual schools are always throughout the day on Saturday. I guess potentially some would not like graduation on Sunday and others would not like convocations on Saturday.


    A few years ago Syracuse University started to alternate religious holidays for Christians, Jews and Muslims by observing different ones each year. They have now gone to a policy where they do not give any religious holidays off except those that happen to fall on normal breaks like Christmas for the winter break. They make provision whereby professors are not allowed to give required exams etc. on religious holidays unless they allow provision for it to be done on an alternate day. Students need to make a request to be allowed to do that.

    I believe this is from Bill Gothard; Put Christ first, your family second and all you other priorities vocation, hobbies, sports and church will fall in the right place. Church and Christ are not synomymous.

    I agree with what everyone is saying....
    and as Paul has said - graduation on Mothers day has been a tradition at SU for years.
    But what is wrong with with have the ceremony later in the afternoon?

    Oh, wait, I think I got it, the grads want a head start to get to the bars.....

    Because our faith is bound to religious duty and some people need time to exhale from the busyness of life.

    One example where I recommended this to a great guy who traveled a lot and was seeing his family time suffer. He was getting worn out serving every Sunday. I told him to take a Sunday off, sleep in, head out for a picnic brunch with his family, have a family devotional, and enjoy time together.

    Too often people, good people, believe that our compulsion to be religious is a way of growing their sanctification. That isn't what Scripture teaches.
