More Phrases From Phillips

I had a thread seven years ago on this subject which was closed. I will start with a portion from Ephesians 1:3-14 (1972 edition)

Praise be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ for giving us through Christ every spiritual benefit as citizens of heaven! For consisder what he has done --before the foundation of the world he chose us to be,in Christ,his children,holy and blameless in his sight. He planned,in his love,that we should be adopted as his own children through Jesus Christ --this was his will and pleasure that we might praise that glorious generosity of his which he granted to us in his Beloved. It is through him, at the cost of his own blood,that we are redeemed,freely forgiven through that free and generous grace which has overflowed into our lives and given us wisdom and insight. For God has allowed us to know the secret of his plan,and it is this: he purposed long ago in his sovereign will that all human history should be consummated in Christ,that everything that exists in Heaven or earth should find its perfection and fulfilment in him. In Christ we have been given an inheritance,since we were destined for this,by the One who works out all his purposes according to the design of his own will. So that we,in due time, as the first to put our hope in Christ,may bring praise to his glory1 And you too trusted in him,when you had heard the message of truth,the gospel of your salvation. And after you gave your confidence to him you were,so to speak,stampted with the promised Holy Spirit as a pledge of our inheritance,until the day when God completes the redemption of what is his own;and that will again be to the praise of his glory.

 

Romans 9:14-21

Now do we conclude that God is unjust? Never! For God says long ago to Moses:
....I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy,and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
It is obviously not a question of human will or human effort,but of divine mercy. The scripture says to Pharaoh:
...For this very purpose did I raise thee up,that I might show in thee my power,and that my name might be published abroad in all the earth.
It seems plain,then, that God chooses on whom he will have mercy,and whom he will harden in their sin.
I can almost hear you retort:"If this is so,and God's will is irresistible,why does God blame men for what they do?"
But the question really is:"Who are you,a man,to make any such reply to God?" When a craftsman makes anything he doesn't expect it to turn round and say, "Why did you make me like this?" Ther potter,for instance,has complete control over the clay,making with one part of the lump a lovely vase,and with another a pipe for sewage.

 

Phillips really did a very big revision with his 1972 model. If people want to criticize his translation they should focus on his 72 year edition.

He had a way with words;didn't he? There are passages even today that sound fresh and quite clear. One could say biblical even.:laugh:

I think even JKV folks would appreciate some of his renderings. He retains archaic language when one is addressing the Lord.

 

I appreciate his style very much. He only used archaic form in prayers. The rest of the time he used proper,yet conventional English.

The above bears repeating. I am not expecting KJVO folks to secure a copy of the Phillips;but KJVP might be encouraged to do so. They should also get a copy of the Revised English Version. The English is superb (though obscure to American readers at times.)

 

From Hebrews One

God,who gave to our forefathers many different glimpses of the truth in the words of the prophets, has now, at the end of the present age, given us the truth in the Son. Through the Son God made the whole universe,and to the Son he has ordained that all creation shall ultimately belong. This Son,radiance of the glory of God,flawless expression of the nature of God, himself the upholding power of all that is, having effected in person the cleansing of men's sins,took his seat at the right hand of the majesty on high -- thus proving himself,by the more glorious name that he had been given far greater than all the angels of God.

 

Romans 1:28-32

Moreover,since they considered themselves too high and mighty to acknowledge God, he allowed them to become the slaves of their degenerate minds, and to perform unmentionable deeds. They became filled with wickedness, rottenness, greed and malice; their minds became steeped in envy, murder ,quarrelsomeness, deceitfulness and spite. They became whisperers-behind-doors, stabbers-in-the-back, God-haters; they overflowed with insolent pride and boastfulness,and their minds teemed with diabolical invention. They scoffed at dudy to parents, they mocked at conscience, recognised no obligations of honour, lost all natural affection, and had no use for mercy. More than this --being well aware of God's pronouncement that all who do these things deserve to die, they not only continued their own practices, but did not hestiate to give their thorough approval to others who did the same.
